Look what I found in my mailbox

Guess what came in the mail?  This is my invitation to join the American Association of Retired People.  Tuesday is my birthday and I'm turning 49, so, Lord willing, I have a few more years to work before I can think about retiring!
I found a neat site; the dMarie Time Capsule, which lets you put in a date and it will tell you about what was happening then.  Here are a few statistics for November 24, 1960.

People born on November 24
Scott Joplin
Dale Carnegie

Prices for 1960
Bread:  $0.20/loaf
Milk:  $1.04/gal
Eggs:  $0.90/doz
Car:  $2,275
Gas:  $0.31/gal
House:  $18,500
 Stamp:  $0.04/ea
Avg Income:  $6,227/yr
Min Wage:  $1.00/hr

On TV in 1960

Gunsmoke
Perry Mason
The Twilight Zone
The Flinstones
Bonanza
Leave it to Beaver
I Love Lucy
The Andy Griffith Show
The Ed Sullivan Show
Alfred Hitchcock Presents

Interesting, isn't it?    The cost and wages are what I find most interesting.  Everything looks so much cheaper, but the average income has really changed too.
Hope you've enjoyed this little look back in time!

Ahh, AARP what a milestone! They got me mixed up with another Cathy, and I started getting there stuff a few years ago, quite a jolt to the system….ha, ha. Happy Birthday.

I get mail from AARP all the time. I am "old" enough to join but so far have resisted being assimilated!

Happy Birthday Susanna! I love you!!! And you are definitely not old enough for that yet. You can't be that old because you have SUCH young kids yet... (wink, wink).
Hope you have a great day today!

AARP? Um, my 50 is coming next year, so don't send them any referrals, o.k.? The dMarie is a very cool site. The changes from then to now are amazing!

I love the fact that I grew up in the 80s and watched so many of those shows listed...Gunsmoke (but didn't like it), The Flinstones, I Love Lucy, The Andy Griffith Show, The Twilight Zone, and Leave it to Beaver. LOL!!

I used that website to get information to put in the scrapbooks for each of the kids, and I have it printed off for both Hubby and me too. It's pretty neat what you can find out on the web.

1960, what a great year!

Hope your day has been wonderful!

I still love watching reruns of a bunch of those old shows, they bring back great memories of my childhood.

Can you imagine buying a house for less than what most cars are these days? That is crazy.
Happy Birthday!

Mari,

Happy Birthday, my friend. I wish you a wonderful day. May all your wishes come true.

Just to let you know, I remember all of the things you have listed. In 1965, I went to work for 65 cents per hour. Within the year I received a raise to 90 cents and thought I'd won a jackpot. LOL

My first husband's birthday, Michelle's father, was born on November 24th. I always think of him on this day. Sad that he died so young.

Blessings,
Mary

That is pretty neat trivia, and congrats on the AARP.

My hubby, who's 11 months older than me, got so mad when the AARP sent him the first mailing before he turned 50. lol

Fun link! Thanks :-)

I did something like this for my girls' baby books. The differences aren't as striking yet, but already things have gotten more expensive. I'm sure in 49 years it will be amazing to see the changes.
