What's your accent?

It seems that most of us think we talk normally and anyone who talks differently has an accent! I found this quiz that tells you what type of accent you have, if you live in the USA. It pegged me exactly, (right down to calling carbonated beverages pop!) so try it and tell me what it says about you. If you are one of my non American friends, you'll have to see if you stump this test!

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Inland North

You may think you speak "Standard English straight out of the dictionary" but when you step away from the Great Lakes you get asked annoying questions like "Are you from Wisconsin?" or "Are you from Chicago?" Chances are you call carbonated drinks "pop."

The Northeast
The Midland
Philadelphia
The South
North Central
The West

It says I have a Midland accent, but I'm not sure it knows what "southern" really is. LOL

So this was fun! It told me:

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

Now I tell people I don't think I have an accent, because I've lost a lot of it (from Arkansas) and when I talk to all my family I hear it so strongly in their voices. People on the other hand tell me they hear it, but it's not "strong," whatever that means.

Before we moved to Michigan last fall and had lived in Virginia for two years, we lived in Southern Illinois right by Missouri for six years, which might have helped.

I think it's hilarious about the pop thing. That is one of the strange things I've had to get used to since moving here!

Guess we are from the same neck of the woods. As my southern kids would say, "You talk through your nose."

Mari,

LOL I didn't fool the quiz. Here is my result:

"North Central" is what professional linguists call the Minnesota accent. If you saw "Fargo" you probably didn't think the characters sounded very out of the ordinary. Outsiders probably mistake you for a Canadian a lot. That was fun. I've taken it before with the same result.

Have a great day.
Blessings,
Mary

That was fun! I scored with the Midland which basically means I don't have an accent. I've been telling people that for years. LOL

This was really fun! It told me my accent was as Philadelphia as a cheesesteak! Lol! Nailed it right on!

I attended Philadelphia College of Bible (Philadelphia Biblical University, now). Grew up just a little west of there. What a hoot! Thanks for a fun quiz!
