Last week Bob and I made a little drive to Holland, MI, which is about 25 minutes from our home. It's a very cute town known for it's Dutch heritage and Tulip Time. It's a great place to shop in the winter because the sidewalks are all heated, so there's no problem with snow or ice while you're walking. We did a little shopping and then picked up a sub for Bob and a salad for me and drove to the Lighthouse.
I've shown you the Lighthouse in Grand Haven many times, but not this one in Holland so here you go!
We parked and ate our lunch in the car, and checked out this view of Lake Michigan. As you can see, there's still lots of ice!
After we ate, we got out and walked toward the Lighthouse. This mansion is on the other side of the channel from where we were walking. Have you heard of the Amway Corporation? This is owned by the son of one of the founders. They've really done a lot of amazing things for the whole Grand Rapids area, but people weren't happy when this was built here as it blocked the walk to the Lighthouse.
Here's the Lighthouse, across from the channel.
Out on the pier, looking over Lake Michigan.
So cold, but so beautiful!
One more photo of the Lighthouse before we left.
It was a cold, but fun adventure!

Dear Mari, this is the kind of place I enjoy a lovely walk. Beautiful photos. ❤️
That is some mansion pretty light house. But the heated sidewalks intrigued me. I wonder how much that costs to run

Whenever I see a giant mansion - all I can think is how much time you would spend cleaning, lol. I am also very interested in heated sidewalks! I have seen homes in ritzy neighborhoods with heated driveways.
The pictures are so pretty. Beautiful area.
Wow! Well, first of all I am glad you are back home safe and did not slip and fall! The ice formations look like ice rimmed plates! And the ice on the shoreline looks like waves frozen in place! The house - Oy! Does he still live in it?
That is cool how you don't have to drive so far for an adventure. That is a big mansion!!
Gorgeous photos. I can't imagine the feeling at home living in such a huge mansion. I guess I'd prefer a little cabin or cottage to that. I prefer cozy, but they are pretty amazing to look at the architecture and the grandeur. Very interesting post 🤗
I love the idea of heated walkways! We don't have those.
Beautiful pictures and beautiful mansion! So much cold and ice make me feel cold ! Here spring has settled but I saw snowy in April so it’s not quite sure.
So beautiful!
That mansion looks AMAZING, like it was taken from a book! I saw some pictures and tv shows that showed lake Michigan and some of the people from one of my favorite shows, Oak Island, are from Grand Rapids, Michigan!
So beautiful.
We forgot to go visit the lighthouse when we visited Holland. Another wonderful lighthouse our state has. Lake Michigan looks like Lake Huron...but at least you can start to see open water towards the middle and the ice is moving down. Janice
You guys are adventurous -going to see this in the cold winter! But wow! Such vastness and beauty! You live in such an interesting part of the country.
Good grief - that mansion! Amway. I remember the time many years ago when my former employer called and said that he and his wife would like to come visit Dick and me. I felt honored! I considered them to be a step up from us socially, haha! WELL!! That friendly visit turned into an Amway sales pitch. I felt betrayed.
You had me at heated sidewalks!! how nice. So much beauty around the lake for sure. I've not heard of that corporation, but it must be huge. A beautiful mansion. Can you imagine walking from one end of this place to the other? Lots of ice but oh so pretty..
I do remember Amway and what a beautiful house. Loved all of your pictures.
What a fun winter adventure! We went to Holland once for the Tulip Festival when my oldest son was a year old. He will be 40 this year, so that has been a while ago. LOL
I didn't know about the heated sidewalks.
I do remember Amway. How interesting about the mansion. It would love to get a peek inside. Looks beautiful!
That house is HUGE! Amway was a big deal back in the 70s. I had a friend who sold Amway and it was kinda like a cult. That looks SO cold on the lake. I can't imagine walking out there!! Holland was a lovely visit, when I was there in July!! xo
Heated sidewalks? I have never heard of such a thing but then I don't get out much, hahaha! Clever and impressive, that concept! The lighthouse is interesting and I don't know what to think of that house. There sure is a lot of it. I'm glad the two of you had an enjoyable and adventurous day! xoxo 🏴☠️
Sure do remember Amway. Products were good but the pyramid selling tactics were hard to take. Are they still around?
Gorgeous views of the Lake. That ice sure goes out far and made me cold just looking at the beautiful photos.
I'm sure getting antsy for some little adventures but our car just won't take us any place. This being broke is for the birds.
Any hoo, I love seeing your adventures with your hubby.
Sue
I'm so glad I found your blog again! I had lots of issues with mine so I deleted my blogger account and I'm seeking all the blogs I followed before. I'm glad I found you today and was able to enjoy these beautiful photos! This is gorgeous! We have a few lighthouses in North Carolina, I would like to visit all of them! the one in Edenton reminds me of the one that you shared! Perhaps I'll visit soon and share photos as well. Hope you have an amazing week!
That's quite a mansion! I love the lighthouse! I could understand people being upset when the mansion was built since it blocks the walkway to the lighthouse.
Heated sidewalks! What a great idea. We need those in our area...and that house. Wow.
Your pictures of Lake Michigan, all frozen over, are fascinating to me. That's a lot of ice!!
The mansion -- wow. Would love to have a tour through that! Yes, Amway. Haven't thought about that company in a very long time.
Mari,
So breathtakingly beautiful!! I would love to see this in person. Look at all that ice!!!! Wow. the lighthouse is so perfect! I love lighthouses and love to grab photos when I can. Usually, on my travels only as I do not have any close to me. Maybe 3 hours is the closest.
Hello my Lovely! Playing some catch up as we just got back last night from AZ. Love the pics - so beautiful in even in all the frosty goodness. I really want to visit that area some day! Blessings xo
My maiden name is Holland - lol.
That is beautiful and I have heard and have used Amway products. Look what it bought - a beautiful mansion.
The blocks of ice melting is just so incredible yet cold looking.
I think we all love lighthouses. What a great time.
Wow heated sidewalks!! I've never heard of that. Would be nice to have in my town, I could walk in town even on icy days. :)
Brr it certainly looks cold, but I did enjoy seeing your photographs from your drive out.
All the best Jan
Heated sidewalks sound wonderful to me! Your views are lovely and what a great day out.
Is Amway still a "thing"? I never hear of it anymore. I know the headquarters used to be in Orlando, but I don't even know if they are still there? That's quite a house! That was built in modern times? Wow! I can only imagine how much it cost to build, and also how much it must cost to heat and maintain! Wow. Your photos of the lighthouse and frozen lake, etc. are just beautiful!!! Heated sidewalks? Wow! Now that's an expensive item!! LOL.
All the photos are so pretty in their own special way!
The mansion is gorgeous...
hugs
Donna
I haven't been to Holland in forever! It sure does look cold and I see there is still some pancake ice on Lake Michigan!
I've never heard of heated sidewalks. I wonder how they do that.
