A Day in my Life

It's August already!  Here's how the first day of the month went at our house.

I started the morning my starting some laundry.  The laundry room is downstairs and not so beautiful, but it works!

In the family room downstairs is the treadmill, and my morning walk was next on the agenda.

After my walk, I went back upstairs, got ready, ate a boiled egg for breakfast and had a little computer time.  Not too long though because this was waiting for me:

Yes - beans to be canned!

Bob came and helped me do some snipping.

Don't they look pretty?

While the canner was running, the laundry got done.

While I was in the kitchen, Bob's brother stopped to help him cut down a tree. Bob's planning to put up a storage barn in the back, but a tree was blocking the spot.

And it's down - but as you can see it took a little more cutting to get it completely down and out of the way.

Meanwhile, I was having trouble in the kitchen.  I have a pressure canner and I got an error message saying it wasn't coming to pressure. I stopped it and started all over only to have the same thing happen.

Bob and I had to get out to bring back an Amazon return and to grab supper so I stopped the canning and thought I would try again when we got home.
We brought our return back and stopped at Panera for supper.  I forgot to take any pictures while out!

When we got home, I got ready to try again and the canner wouldn't even turn on.  So frustrating since I've only had it for a year.  I called the company and they were very helpful.  They sent out a new lid for the sealing/pressure issue and told me how to get it going again. I've already canned Salsa with the new lid and it worked without any issues!

Here's the beans that got done!

A little walk outside is good for frustration!

Do you remember all the acorns we had last fall?  Bob put them all in a pile in our back wooded area and these are some crazy mushrooms growing there.

The garden phlox are blooming.

The Black Eyed Susan's are just beautiful this year.  Lots of our flowers have suffered in this drought, but they seem to handle it ok.

Then we had a little time on the front porch before coming in and watching an episode of The Repair Shop.

It was a day with some frustrations, but still good!

Hi Mari. Wow, the first of August was a busy day for you! Glad that you were able to get the company you bought the canner from to help you. I know that must have been frustrating for you! You guys have a big piece of property. A storage barn in back will make a nice addition. Your flowers are lovely. I hope that August is a good month for you. See you again soon!

That was a full day there. A lot going on. Canning, fixing the canner(?), laundry, trees, looking at the gorgeous flowers, exercise - do you stay that busy everyday?

I have never canned. My mom never canned. My grandma did. Not many around here do any canning.I have made freezer jam and blanched veggies and fruit for the freezer but no canning. I think I got scared hearing all the Botulism stories back from the depression and the 1900’s. Thankful the canning method has improved. But I can see me learning to can now.

What an action packed day! Your beans look amazing, but how frustrating to have the canner malfunction. I was always a little afraid of my pressure canner, but I never had a problem with it. I am glad the company was helpful. My hot water bath canner for fruits was my best friend. My favorite thing to pressure can was beef. A friend taught me (using USDA guidelines) and nothing tastes better than pressure canned beef.

I have never seen mushrooms this weird! How frustrating about the canner, but all's well that ends well!

Nothing like a working canner to turn kitchen frustration back into accomplishment

Sounds like a good day for the first of August, minus the canner frustration! I'm glad the company was helpful! Your flowers look so pretty!

You have such a good attitude about the frustrations, Mari. That says a lot about a person. *hugs* You had a busy day and a relaxing reward at the end. Those green beans look wonderful & will be your little taste of summer in January! Much love, Andrea xoxo

Those green beans look so good. I have never canned but my Mom did. Like Debby I have done freezer jam when we had a bounty of plums a few years ago. No fruit this year to do anything with.
You were one busy lady and accomplished so much. I have got to do some laundry this morning too. At least it's not as hot today as yesterday. Today 99F. Yesterday 104F. Ugh Icky.
Hope August is Good to you.

That sounds like a very busy and productive day. The problem with the canner sounds frustrating. Glad you were able to get good customer service and get outside to help with the frustration. Your finished product looks so good and will be a delicious treat all through the colder months. Did you and Bob grow the beans?

We didn't grow the beans. We have a very small raised garden with only tomatoes, basil, green peppers. I have a friend who has a farm market and I bought them from her.

Some days are busier than others! But I do like to stay busy. :)

I need to use my pressure canner and can beef. I know it's the best!

I have canned quite a few pints and quarts of green beans this year, so when I saw your basketful, it made me cringe! I picked a mess from the garden Saturday evening for supper and told my husband it was time to pull the plants up and til the ground for our fall planting. But he did not quite believe me so he went out there later in the evening yesterday and brought in a container full, but he announced the plants are done. Phew!
I am sorry about your pressure canner issues, that is frustrating indeed! But I am glad you were able to get some beans canned and have your canner fixed now. Enjoyed reading about your day...Blessings!

I'm glad they sent you a new lid. That's wonderful. I've killed now ... lemme see... two or three pressure cookers. I can't recall. Killed many air fryers, every blender I ever owned and the food processors. Really, I need commercial grade. Beans look good though! Yum. Love beans.

I have never tried canning anything - but would like to get try some day. Frustrating about the pressure canner, but happy to hear you got it working again. Your flowers look so beautiful! Those are some crazy mushrooms though. Lol One of these days I'm going to need to break down and get brit box!! :)

I'm late commenting , but I finally made it here. So sorry you had the frustration with the pressure cooker....BUT, you got the job done and they look beautiful. I love to see the results of canning...just makes a person feel good. It didn't take them long to get the tree down. I know Bob will have the building built in no time and you wont even miss the tree. A good walk outside does do wonders though...

Another busy day for you. Great job on all that canning.
How long do you walk on the treadmill? That is just something I cannot do.:)

Mari said...

I walk for 30 minutes every morning.

Love your phlox and black eyed susan's.

All the best Jan

What A Day! I glad that you were able to save your beans, that was a lot of work. I probably would have gotten discouraged, drained them and put them in the freezer. Canned is much better than frozen when it comes to beans :)
Your flowers are beautiful.
