Tip for Tuesday

I eat boiled eggs for breakfast quite frequently.  I saw a tip about boiling eggs that I had to try.  I don't know about you but I have a terrible problem with eggs cracking when I put them into boiling water.  It's a rare thing for me to not lose at least one egg.
I've heard a lot of people start their eggs in cold water to avoid this, but I can't stand to wait around for it to come to a boil, plus it makes it harder to peel
So - the tip I saw, said to poke a tiny hole into the wide bottom of the egg.  This allows the air to escape from the pocket at the bottom and  that makes them less likely to crack

I tried it:

Here are the eggs, the holes are poked into them and they are ready to boil.  You can see the tack I used to make the hole.

I put them into the boiling water and guess what?  Not a single crack!

Here's the eggs, freshly boiled and not a leak out of those little holes.

When I went to use them, they peeled like a charm!
I've done this several times now, and not one egg has cracked.
I'll be using this method in the future.  It's well worth the little bit of time it takes to poke those holes.

Now that is useful. Thanks. I steam ours for 12 minutes (slightly shorter if I want soft boiled). They peel easily but there's always that one that cracks ... I'll try this too. Awesome tip. xx

Thank you! I've always had trouble boiling eggs. Most of the time one cracks or the eggs are hard to peel.

I broke down at the end of last year and bought a small Dash Egg Cooker and the instructions for using it have me poking a hole in one end of the eggshell just as you did.

I got so lazy that I purchase the already boiled and peeled eggs at Publix, in the deli. They cost a bit more but are done perfectly. When I do boil eggs, I start them in cold water, wait for the boil, then take them off the burner and set the timer for 10 minutes. It always works well for me and I have never had a cracked egg doing that. Your method looks good too. Thanks for the tip!

-chuckle- YOu can't wait for the cold water to boil!

But I read that one never uses hot water for cooking. Forget why.

Anyway, being retired, I have the time to wait for water to boil. You are a busy lady, so I can see, how you would not have.

Cute idea!

I've never had my eggs crack, but if poking a hole in them makes them easier to peel, I'll have to try that. Thanks for the tip.

I don't know if I have much of a problem with eggs cracking but I'll have to try this just because I am curious! Funny how there are as many methods for hard boiling eggs as there are cooks who hard boil them. You should hear Audrey and me go on and on about "correct" way to do it, haaahahahaaha! We end up having to agree to disagree ... xoxo
