Visiting Austin!

We had 2 extra days in Texas, so we  decided that on one of them we would visit Austin. It was close to an hour driving time from our hotel.

The highways in West Michigan are much calmer than the ones in Texas.  Our highways are 2 lanes, the ones going into Austin was 5 lanes with things going over and under us.  We said it felt like the Jetsons!

A beautiful city!

Our first stop was the Driskill hotel.  It opened in 1887 and has been the site of most of the Texas governors inaugurations in the last 100 years.  It's also where LBJ met Lady Bird Johnson and later proposed to her.  It's an absolutely beautiful building!

The old car sitting in front just adds to the charm!

Here's the view when we walked in.  There's a restaurant on the bottom floor and also a bakery.  We went into the bakery and got a croissant before we went on a tour of the city.

We took a 1 1/2 hour tour of the city, and saw much more than if we had tried to do it ourselves.

A statue of Willie Nelson, who is very well known in Austin.  We went down 6th street which is known for music of all kinds and also saw where the tape the show 'Austin City Limits'.

This is a restaurant named Stubbs, a place that Willie Nelson frequently shows up and and does impromptu concerts.

We went through the Austin Memorial Cemetery.  This is the Civil War Section.

 It's a beautiful place.

It's the resting place of Chris Kyle, an American hero.

We drove to the wealthy side of Austin.  One of these homes belongs to Michael Dell, founder of Dell computers.  It's also where Sandra Bullock, Matthew McConaughey and some other celebrities live.

We saw an art museum with this unusual sculpture in front.

We saw the capitol building - so beautiful!

We stopped at this iconic sign for a photo shoot before heading back to the hotel.

You ane your sisters are much more adventurous than I would be! Five lanes of traffic are waaaayyyy too much for me! Lol! I like it the way you did it just fine...you go, find the highlights and come home and share them with us! :) The buildings are just beautiful...especially the hotel...and the story of LBJ that goes with it.

My daughter has to drive to Austin often for work and she says the traffic is the worse she has ever experienced. Great idea to schedule a tour rather than trying to find different sites yourself and great pictures of all the sights.
