Our second day in Munising was another beautiful day.
This was the view from our room that morning.
We were scheduled to go out on Lake Superior again, this time on a Shipwreck tour. We saw this on the way to the launch site, the remains of an old pier.
Here we were, waiting to board our ship. It was a glass bottomed boat, made especially for viewing things under the water. Lake Superior is known as one of the cleanest lakes in the world, the water is very clear which makes it a good place to see things like this.
Here's an arial view of the first shipwreck with our glass bottom boat over it.
We saw 2 shipwrecks, both were in fairly shallow water which allows the wreck to be seen quite well. This ship is the Bermuda which sunk in 1870 in very shallow water. The top deck is only 12 feet below the surface. Because Lake Superior is usually very cold, the wood is preserved quite well.
The round hole in the bottom picture is where the mast of the ship was. It's 8 feet in diameter.
While going to our next shipwreck, we saw this building on the mainland and were told it was our hotel!
We also passed this old Lighthouse. It was retired from use in the early 1900's but is a favorite of photographers for its rustic, weathered look.
This is the second shipwreck, the Herman Hettler. It sank in 1926 and the wreck is scattered over 1/2 mile of the lake bottom. You can see the anchor above. It's bigger than it appears in the photo, 8 feet long.
We were enjoying our time on the water and so were a bunch of people who were out on kayaks.
After our cruise was done, we had lunch at a local Pasty place. The U.P. is known for their Pasties so we had to try them while we were there.
Munising has these Bigfoot statues around town for people to find. Bob was having a little chat with this guy.
After lunch we went on some hikes in the area. We walked to several waterfalls. This is Wagner Falls.
Some beautiful tree roots we saw along the way.
This is Miners Falls. It was a hike to get to it and then when we got to the site, you could barely see it through the trees. However, if you went down a bunch of stairs you could see it. We did it and were glad we did, it was beautiful!
This is one of the rock formations we saw from our cruise the night before. It's called Miners Castle. Check out the water. I was often surprised by the water color as it looked turquoise in many spots - like it should be in the Caribbean.
Here's a better example of the water color.
We hiked down to Miners Castle to see it closer.
After enjoying that time outside, we went for supper to a nearby town called Christmas, Michigan.
We had supper at this old inn; The Brownstone Inn.
Since we were on the lake, where fresh fish is abundant, we both had fish for supper and enjoyed it.And that was the end of day 2!

How fun to be able to be on the glass bottom boat and see these two shipwrecks, Mari! And I love it that you guys hiked to see the falls. The fish meals both look delicious. And I love the look of the Brownstone Inn. So happy for you both that you were able to do this special time away.
Hi Mari! That looks like a really nice getaway. Glad you could go and have some fun with Bob. Retirement is so great! See you again soon!
Wow Mari, it must have been fascinating on the glass bottom boat. Your meals look delicious and you both look amazing. Beautiful photos, dear friend. What a fantastic experience for you. Thank you for sharing.
The Miner's Castle shot is my favorite. It is all gorgeous and the water is so stunning! What an awesome trip in the glass bottomed boat!! And I had no idea how amazing Lake Superior water is!!
Such a lovely view to wake up to! Looks like you're having a great time Mari.
That looks like it was an awesome day! I've been on a glass bottom boat and it is very cool but especially when you're on such clear water. I love all of your photo's. It is such a gorgeous area.
What a beautiful place.
In Alpena you can also take a glass bottom boat out to see a shipwreck. What an awesome view to be right on top of those. I feel bad for those who may have lost their lives, but yes Lake Superior will preserve them all. What beautiful pictures and waterfalls. I have not been to those ones. Christmas, Mi, I believe will postmark letters for folks during Christmas. Your trip was a fantastic one Mari. Thanks for sharing with us all. Janice
I seriously miss the north...I was born in Connecticut...New London and lived in Stonington (close to Old Mystic). Yes, winters can be brutal, but it was my home for several years until my mom and dad moved to Texas...We went back every Summer to stay for vacations but it's never like living there and around family. Maybe, one day, I'll go back.
You and hubby's photo is wonderful...glad you enjoyed the trip!
hugs
Donna
Wow, what a great trip! Seeing those shipwrecks is really interesting! Amazing!! And I love that old lighthouse building. Wish you could get inside of it! The water and rocks and waterfalls are all so beautiful! I had no idea it was so beautiful up there! And your fish dinner really looks good! Thank you for sharing this with us. It looks like a wonderful place to visit.
My dad used to take us up North as kids. He was into boat races and crewed for other people. I can remember how clear that water was! We dropped pennies to see them land on the bottom. Coming from Lake Erie in the 1960/70 era it was a whole new world to us!
What wonderful photos. The boatwrecks are fantastic! And the food! And the hike! What a fabulous getaway.
I would never have pictured Lake Superior having such crystal-clear, pristine water, Mari. Absolutely stunning colors, too. How cool is it to see the shipwrecks through the glass bottom boat tour? You certainly live in a spectacular state!
That does look like a beautiful day! How cool to go on a glass bottomed boat, it looks like an interesting adventure. It looks like a great day!
Mari, I love all of your photos. What a delightful trip with so many gorgeous spots of scenery.
I really love the shot of your hubby chatting with Big Foot ..such rapt attention (:0)
How were the pasties?
I also love the windblown look of you two out on the water. Vacations really agree with you !

What a fun trip! They do glass bottom boat tours of shipwrecks? How cool is that? I know folks that dive to shipwrecks in Lake Superior. I grew up on this lake and take our pontoon out on her often and I love her - bit I also fear her. Our lake ain't no joke, as they say. Lol She is so cold and very strong! But what a great way to appreciate her beauty and history. The other places you visited sounded so fun too! Beautiful pics. 😍
You two find the most interesting places to visit and enjoy!! Great photos, Mari (as always)!! I didn't know about the clean, clear water of Lake Superior! Seeing the sunken wrecks is sad but also pretty spectacular. The weathered lighthouse is my favorite site you shared, though the waterfalls are gorgeous. Wow! Thanks for sharing!! xo
Mari, in reading your blog posts over the years, I've learned and seen more of Michigan than I ever knew before. It is so very beautiful and there is such interesting things to see and do! Those ship wrecks in such clear water are amazing.
Another fun vacation day! I love that glass bottom boat and the water is gorgeous. It looks more like a tropical island than a midwestern lake!
Your camera takes such good photos.. I know this was a fun adventure being able to see through the glass bottom boat. The water really is pretty clear. Looks like see yummy food that y'all found to eat..
So interesting to see the ship wreck at the bottom of the lake.
Those tree roots are amazing.
I've been to Christmas some years ago. :)
Just beautiful, Mari. I love that old lighthouse and can see how photographers love taking photos of it. I didn't know that about Lake Superior having the cleanest water. I grew up thinking the Great Lakes were polluted. I'd love to take my husband there. We especially love the rock formations. The wrecked ships at the bottom are surreal.
What an unusual looking lighthouse. I really like it.
Funny picture of Bob and Bigfoot.
It's wonderful that you and Bob are in such great shape you can do all that hiking.
