Cooking Thursday

Every year, my Dad asks me to freeze the ham bone  from the Christmas ham and make him some pea soup.  I made that soup last week, and had him and my stepmom over for supper.  The recipe I use is one that I got from a local paper about 30 years ago.  They had a contest for best soup, and this recipe won.  We enjoy it and I bet you would too!

Dutch Green Pea Soup1 pound split green peas, rinsed
2 1/2 quarts water
3 medium onions. chopped
2 large stalks celery, sliced
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon pepper
1 ham bone with meat
4 large carrots, sliced
4 large potatoes, cubed

Combine peas, water, onions, celery, salt, pepper and ham bone. Heat to boiling; reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/2 hours. Add carrots and potatoes and simmer another hour until peas have cooked down to a thick broth and potatoes and carrots are tender. Stir occasionally during cooking. More water may be added if soup is too thick. Makes 10 generous servings.

Mari whenever I see Green Pea Soup I think of the children's book, George and Martha. Martha made pea soup for George but he did not like it...he put it in his shoes to keep from hurting Martha's feelings. I am with George on this one...though I am sure for those who like Pea Soup it is delicious.

That's sweet of you Mari. I always buy a ham for New Year's and we have ham soup too. I don't use a recipe, lol but if I had one it looks pretty similar to what you use.

That looks like comfort food/soup for sure. Will have to try it here, although Ham is not so easy to find here.

Sounds so good. Not sure the rest of the bunch in this house would agree though!

I love pea soup! I make it pretty often myself, with whatever is left from the Christmas and Easter hams. I have one planned for two weeks from now.

Can you believe I have never eaten pea soup? I will have to give it a try, using your recipe.

I love pea soup, and that looks delish! I've actually never made it, but remember that Mom did. :)

Pea soup is one of my top five favorites, but I have never made it from scratch before. I will keep this recipe to try soon! Yum!

Wow, this makes me hungry!! It looks just like the split pea soup I make occasionally. But not this winter so far. I always make bran muffins to go with it. A most comforting meal for a cold winter evening.
