Drenthe and Vriesland

Last week I showed you some pictures of the little community of Zutphen where I grew up. I mentioned then, that there were several communities nearby that were also named after cities in the Netherlands.  Today I have pictures of Drenthe and Vriesland.  These two communities run right into each other so I'm lumping them together here.

Like much the area around me, there is lots of farmland.

And lots of fields of corn!  I love seeing the rows of corn, especially this time of year when it tassels.

This used to be the village store, but has now been turned into an ice cream/sandwich shop.

Isn't it cute inside?  I felt like I was stepping back in time.

In a nod to the farming community, these seats are made from old tractor seats.

This building is now just used for storage, but in the past it was a poultry farm.  The style looks like it could be in the Netherlands.

Isn't this a beautiful old church?  I remember going to Bible School here when I was a kid.  The churches in the area were all small country churches so we did Bible School together, with a different church hosting each year.

As you can see, these communities are mainly farms, houses and churches!
These pictures remind me of why I like living in the country and enjoying the small communities around here.

My friend Susanna who lives in Zutphen in the Netherlands passed on this link for people who want to see what her Zutphen looks like.  Hope you enjoy:

I'm pretty much a small-town/community person, too. These are such beautiful pictures, Mari. The sky is SO blue.....

I love the small towns and the country too. We lived on a 30 acre farm, on a dirt road for 20 years, while rearing our children, and seeing your pictures, make me miss it. Have a great Tuesday.

It's so pretty and green there. I love small, old town like those. When my husband and I lived in northern NY, we used to do lots of driving trips around the area, stopping at little towns like those. I loved poking around in their little stores and looking at old buildings and houses.

I grew up in a small farming community, with lots of corn fields (and soybeans and pigs!). Nothing like it, and it's too bad everyone couldn't grow up that way. People care about their neighbors, and everyone's house is your "home" too. Thanks for sharing the photos and memories, Mari. I am enjoying them!

The tractor seats are so clever, and yeah the inside of the cafe looks very old fashioned but so clean! Everything is shinning.

I love living in the country too, although it's very different from these photos!
