Barn Charm

I love barns! I think it's partly because I grew up on a farm and the nostalgia they bring. In my area there are lots and lots of them and I'm always pulling to the side of the road to get a picture. I participate in a weekly meme on my photo blog called Barn Charm where people from all over the world post pictures they've taken of barns. The barn I'm sharing today is one I was able to get into so I thought I'd share pictures here from inside and outside. This barn is on property our church bought. We will be putting up a building here at some time so unfortunately the barn will be coming down. It's in pretty rough condition, so that would probably happen anyway. The man who used to own this farm was a resident at the nursing home I work at. He was a real sweetheart and I enjoyed looking around the property and remembering him.

Here's the barn from the front.

Here's the side view.  There are missing boards and the vines are taking over.

The back is really covered by the vines.

A few of the doors on it.

I love the old windows.

When we went inside we found a spot where the chickens lived.

And we found lots of junk!  This barn hasn't been used for farming for a long time, and it looked like anytime he didn't know what to do with something, it ended up in the barn.

More stuff stacked up in nooks and crannies.

Crawling up into the loft area, you can see how many boards are missing.

This is looking outside from one of the upper windows which no longer has any glass.  I thought it was neat to look out and see the field where the church will be built.

Thanks for taking us on a tour of this barn with special ties from the past. That last photo should be on display in your new church when it is built!
If possible, you should ask for one of the old windows as a keepsake.

Our church is called "The Barn". It was a children's Play Barn with slides etc for years. The name has really caught on with the local community.

Love the old barn and how exciting that your church is building and growing. We reared our children on a 30 acre farm that had an old barn so that was a good memory for me too. Have a super Monday!

Mari,

Thanks for this trip inside a barn before it will be taken down. Hopefully the church can use some of the old pieces of the barn and incorporate it into the new building. There is such character to all the pieces, from the roof to the windows and even the door.

I think if it were possible I'd love to renovate one and turn it into a great bookstore/coffee shop and invite people in. There is something to be said about the warm and comfort a barn has provided. Shelter from a storm perhaps.

What beautiful photos. I love looking at old barns and churches.
These should end up on the church wall when it is built.

The barns in the midwest and northern parts of the country are better than ours down here. I like your pictures of this one, Mari. I bet there are some treasures in all that "junk."

Oh the stories I'm sure the walls of this charmer could tell! I'd love to be able to go through the things sitting in there!

I liked the room for the chickens...the nests for the laying hens. It looks so much like the one that was in our old barn. I loved our old barn too and spent many hours playing in it when I was a kid.

The chicken house looks so much like ours when we lived on a little farm. We raised chickens and had eggs to give away for quite a few years. I hate to admit, but the junk in the barn also looks like ours did. When we sold that place in 2005 and downsized to a place much, much smaller, it was an enormous job to get rid of everything.

This is a big barn. It's just bad that it's falling behind because of age. Good thing your church bought this; at least it will be taken down for a good reason. I like the way you capture every side of this barn. From the whole exterior to the smallest detail like the doors and windows damage, you gave this barn a chance to show it's beauty for one last time. #Danielle @ VinylumeInc.com
