At one point we saw what looked like a big steeple next to a corn field. We drove in that direction and found this beautiful, old stone church. Next to it was an old cemetery, with this poignant scene near the front of it. There were a lot of young children buried in this area.
Here's just a few of the barns we saw.
We stopped for lunch and then he said we would move on to part 2 of the day. Again we were driving out in the country when we got to our destination - a huge car museum in the middle of the cornfields.
This is the Gilmore Car Museum. It's not just pole barns filled with cars - it's a beautiful place! The cars are in barns and other buildings that have been moved and restored. You get the feeling that you've stepped back in time.
The white car in the collage is a 1935 Duesenberg, one of only 4 that was made. It's in original condition and has only 16,000 miles on it.
This is one of 8 historic barns on the site. This one was dismantled piece by piece and moved to the site.
This is the original "Little Deuce Coupe" which graced the cover of the Beach Boys Album of the same name.
This is an actual road side Diner, which was moved here from Connecticut and is now open to serve guests.

wow...that was a fun little trip! I love that you did things like that and surprised each other along the way...how very fun!
that double decker bus is so cute!
Now I would have loved to spend the day with you! The cars are wonderful! So happy you two got to see and do so much on your day trip.
Sounds like another lovely day! Beautiful shots!
LOVED this!!! I grew up with 3 older brothers, so I have always lived with cars, y'know? And the 1935 Duesenberg ---16,000 miles is a lot considering that era, isn't it? Maybe the milage tallied up in later years tho.
Loved the car barn, looks mighty pristine. And your country road trip with dirt roads and all took me back to my youth.
Would love the 1940's 1950's roadside dinner like that. I'd have me a colossal cheeseburger, fries, and a thick chocolate shake right up there at the counter. And play from the flip-style juke box.
What a trip!!!
What a super great day you had! Thanks for sharing your trip.
ps....I had to have Bud come in and see if he knew what car that was, and Duesenberg it was. LOL Now, we are wondering if the hood ornament above came from a Pierce Arrow?
He did such a good job planning his day. What a fun day :) I love love love that brown barn- so cool!
you two had an amazing time! A lot of interesting things you saw along the way. I love the stories you tell on your little adventures. Amazing how you find all the cool places.

My hubs would love that barn of cars.
Those onion rings are to die for.lol
Gosh, I have loved tagging along with you on your day trips. You are giving me some great ideas! How far away is the car museum? I think my in-laws would love to do this with us.

I loved reading this post....I don't know how you and Bob have managed to come up with such great day trips but each one has been special...And how sweet that he wanted to take you out to photograph barns....AHHH
You got to see so MANY wonderful things of various kinds. I'd say he did good.
That was a WONDERFUL DAY - and good for your nice husband to take you. You shared some great pictures with us, too.
I loved the Dusendorf - and could not help but wish that I only had 16,000 miles on me! :)
What a fun day!!
What a fun day!!
That looks like a really fun day. I would enjoy that museum! I loved Fonzie, I had a crush on him when I was little. :)
A Cadillac barn, an old cemetery, and a frozen custard cone? That's my kind of day.
Another fun day with stuff for both of you to love! (and the diner's from CT, where I live, pretty cool!) thanks, as always, for sharing with us!
I loved your vacation. How cool that you each planned a day to surprise the other.
What a great surprise for you, and a fun day for you both! Awesome! I love seeing old cars and history restored!! Trying to catch up after being away for four days. Making sure I get to all of yours! Love this idea!
