My friend Sarah, over at Short Stop did a fun little Meme today. It's all about being a Mom and things you know now, that you didn't before you had kids. I loved hers and thought I would share some of the things I've learned since I became a Mom about 25 years ago!
1. Before my kids were born, I had no idea how what a tough job motherhood is. I soon found out that it is a 24-7 job and babies don't allow breaks or nights off!
2. I found out that my parents were a lot smarter than I thought they were. I now know that they knew more about what was happening in my life than I thought, and I'm so much more impressed with the way they handled my siblings and I.
3. Your child may be a perfect angel all day, but at the time you really need them to behave or you are trying to show them off, they will become a monster!
4. When my kids were young, I remember my Dad telling me to enjoy them because they grow up so fast. You know, that's one of those things you hear a lot - the fact that they grow up fast. When you are in the middle of feedings, diapers, toys strewn all over, it doesn't seem fast. I did enjoy my kids when they were little, but oh how true it is - time really does fly. Now I wish I could go back and hold them, play with them, read to them... for just one more afternoon.
5. Once you are a Mom, you will always worry. I was told by a young woman who was expecting her first child that she couldn't wait for the baby to be born so she could quit worrying. I understood what she meant, but I did think, that really, the worrying was just beginning. You worry when they are sick, when they start school, when they have problems with other kids, when they are late... It's a good thing I know that God takes better care of them than I do and I can trust him to watch them!
6. You will never know how much you can love someone until you are a Mom. The love you have for your child is a different type of love than you have for your husband, sibling, parent or friend and that is what helps you through those sleepless nights, the worry, the work and anything else that comes along. It is a true blessing to be a Mom and something I wouldn't give up for anything!

oh how i laughed at number 3! so very, very true. and yes...this love...like none other that i feel as a mother was not expected or understood til now. and after reading that book...i can ALMOST, just a tiny bit understand God's love for me as His child!
Yup that's why we're waiting! I figure that the longer I know my husband the more I'll 'understand' our children -when they're acting like him- We were Foster Parents for a year, and I did help raise my 10 year younger brother (my mom was a single parent), so I kind of know how hard of a job it was. Even though part of me yearns for a baby I can LOVE and take CARE of, I also know to have a secure and stable home for them is best! So Jeff and I are working hard (it'll be near our 6th Anniversary that we'll start trying), preparing the nest!!! PATERNAL TWINS RUN IN BOTH OUR FAMILIES
That was a great list. You're right about having so much more respect for mom and dad after you are parents yourself.
What a great and thoughtful list. I would add that it's a given that if your on the phone...you child will demand your total attention, and once you hang up...they won't be bothered with you any more!
I remembering the same thing about the worrying - you never stop.
So very true. I used to always wonder why my mom couldnt sleep until I got home. Whew, Boy. I totally understand now and I am not looking forward to the time when Josh and Caleb are old enough to stay out late
Great insight--I can echo most of those. I might have to steal this one!
Wonderful list! I've only been a mother for a little over 18 months but boy how it has changed my life forever.
That's a great list! I got a little teary eyed on #4,just one afternoon would be awesome.#5 was a great reminder,God is taking even better care of them than I can. Thanks Mari,Patty
#3 is SO, SO true.
#4 made me teary. I am trying to savor it all, but it's something I have to purposefully remind myself of every day.
The worrying. Again, SO true. I often tell Jason that I never really felt anxiety until I had the boys. It's such a unique kind of worry. Protective, I suppose.
I'm so glad you did this. I loved reading your thoughtful answers!
I love your list. You are right about the love a mother has for her children. It is an attachment like none other.
All so true, Mari. I love that quote I heard somewhere about, being a mom is like having your heart walking around outside your body! Thank you for being a pro life blogger.
Love your list Mari :)
what a beautiful meme list mari. i know your list doesn't stop at 6. children have a way of keeping us in school don't they? that's a good thing.

I loved this post on Sarah's blog, and I love it here. What a blessing to glean from the wisdom of other Christian moms. I have to remind myself all the time that Adeline belongs to God...not to me....she sure is a blessing though. :o)
This is really sweet and so very true!
Amen Sista!!!!!!
I agree!
That made me cry. You're the best Mom anyone has ever had I'm sure (no offense to any other moms.) I'm guessng it's because I taught you all those useful things... he he he.. I'm sorry I gave you so much trouble, and honestly, sometimes I wish I was little again and could curl up in your arms and not worry about any bigger worries than learning to ride my bike.
