Cooking Thursday

The recipe I'm sharing with you today is for Sloppy Joes. I know some people really like the kind you buy in a can, but we aren't big fans of it.  However, this recipe is one my family really likes.  I've been making it for years and we haven't gotten sick of it.  Plus, it's so easy to throw together that it doesn't take much longer than the can variety.  :)

Sloppy Joe
2 pound hamburger, browned and drained
1/2 cup chopped onion, optional
4 tablespoons corn starch
2 teaspoons salt
4 tablespoons sugar
4 tablespoons vinegar
1 cup water
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 cup catsup
2 tablespoons mustard
Put browned hamburg and onions in bowl and microwave on high until hot. Add cornstarch, salt and sugar and stir together. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir together. Microwave on high for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally until sauce thickens. This recipe reheats well, so may be refrigerated for later use or just place on low in slow cooker to keep warm.
*This makes a large amount.  I make half of this for Bob and I and it's still enough for a few meals.
**Do you see the cheese on the sandwich?  It's something Bob's family always did with Sloppy Joes, and it really is good!

I had to take a second look at that cheese! I've never heard of such a thing!

Your sloppy joe looks really yummy. My mom used to make this a lot with a variation of the recipe. I'm just wondering why you don't make it on the stove rather than in the microwave?

Joyful - you could easily do this on the stove. I just do it in the microwave because the original recipe had those instructions, plus I don't have to stir it too often this way.

Ooooh this sounds delicious. It reminds me of my m-i-l's homemade from-scratch sloppy joe recipe, although if memory serves, hers had bell pepper in it. I have her recipe so I think I'll compare the two. Either way you've made me hungry for sloppy joes! TG and the kids love them. xoxo thanks Mari :~D

This does sound delicious! I grew up eating sloppy joes (we called them sloppy Helens - my mom's name) but my Joe isn't a fan. I think he takes offense at the name, perhaps! I might get him to try this home-made version!!

Sounds good. I like the 'easy' part of it. We do like sloppy joes so will give this a try.

We aren't familiar with sloppy joes, but it sure looks and sounds good! I think I'll make this using lamb instead of hamburger since that is what I have on hand. Thanks for the recipe!

I LOVE sloppy joes! I've never made them from scratch like this before, though, I only ever use Manwich sauce. But I would love to try your recipe sometime, so thank you for sharing.

Similar to mine but different and sound so yummy! I love trying new recipes so will definitely try this one. And how convenient to use the micro for some of it too!!

Thanks for sharing Hon. xoxo

I've only had Sloppy Joe's with the meat added to what's in the can, too so I would love to try your recipe. It looks and sounds delicious. Thanks... :)
