Annual Survey

I mentioned last week that we were having our annual state survey at the nursing home where I work.
Thankfully it's done and we did well.  Although we understand the necessity of it, those of us who work there dread it.  The surveyors stay a week, they follow us with clipboards, writing things down, they ask lots of questions and it's just stressful!
The team we had this year was quite pleasant and had common sense.  I've worked there for 23 years and that isn't always the case.  A few crazy citations I remember are - a banana peel on a table was labeled as trash on the table, (The resident was sitting at the table eating the banana)  we were cited for not having a policy for cleaning a fly swatter...  Of course, if you looked at the survey, you wouldn't find these written out. They would go under something like infection risk which always sounds worse than it is.
However, as I said this year went well.  When they did their exit, the head person said that they could tell this was a good place and she said she would put her mother here if she had to.  She also said they interviewed residents and family members and heard only good things, no complaints!
What a relief to be done for another year!

If they would put their own parents there, that is the best compliment you could have ever received! Yay! Good for all of you!

Having worked in healthcare before, I know passing that was a big deal.
What a wonderful compliment to you and your fellow co-workers.

Congratulations, Mari! I so admire the work you do.

As for nutty "infection risks" - I would say that those "inspectors" might be at-risk for the infection known as "SH" (sheer idiocy) - just saying. :)
Blessings to you in your work - Marsha

In my 12 years in the nursing home, I remember only one deficiency-free survey. I loved both of our homes. My mom was in the one that I last worked in and I wouldn't take anything for those two years that she was with me there. She received the best care! Nursing homes are given bad raps. I know there are some that are bad, but I truly think that most have the residents' best interest at heart. Glad it's over and glad ya'll had a good one.

It sounds like a wonderful place to work and be a part of.

Well now...did they LOOK in the wastebaskets too then? Oh my gosh...a banana peel on the table. That irks me.

Glad you did good this year.

Congrations! I know from personal experience how stressful that is, and one of them saying they would put their mother there, says it all!!!

Congratulations to you, and to your place of employment! I know how good that feels, to be done with inspections/audits! Excellent news. That the inspector said she would put her mother there says a lot.

Wow that's a wonderful compliment Mari (about the surveyor putting their own mother there). I worked in long term care for many years as a social worker and I remember those surveys well (live in Wisconsin)and never enjoyed them either. I love your blog and relate well being another Gal from the north. Have a great week free of that stress!

I'm really glad it went well. I remember when I first started teaching, the principal observing me said he'd be glad to have his own kid in my class. That was a nice compliment too! You must be relieved, now relax and enjoy work. :)

I know how relieved you must feel. Glad that's behind you and you can look back at all your hard work and know you've done a good job - and it's been recognized!

You know, if I had to go to a nursing home, I think I would want to go to yours. I guess I should move to MI first.

I am glad that you had another good report. I knew that you would.

I wish all nursing homes were as good as yours! Some here in the UK have a terrible reputation, especially those on the NHS.

That is awesome! What a testament as to the caring people who work there! :) I wish it were true of all care facilities.

So happy for all of you. Having worked with so many of you I know first hand how everyone truly cares for each resident. Congrats on the good survey. You derserve all the compliments of praise!!

LOL well the mother comment was probably high praise but could be taken another way by a cynic, hahahahaaaa. Maybe the acid test would be, but would you put your mother IN LAW here? haahahaha by the way, I'm not surprised it's stressful but not surprised either that they leave impressed, what with you and Terri and Cheri working there. But any gubmint intervention is bound to be as ignorant as it is onerous. xoxo
