From Charleston, we drove to Savannah.
My friend Jenny, from I'm having a Thought Here told us that if we were in Savannah, we had to go visit the Bonaventure Cemetery, so we made that our stop before checking into our hotel.
Bob and I both find old cemeteries so interesting, and this one was beautiful, with live oak trees dripping in spanish moss.
This is a military section and was very touching.
Such beautiful stones and sculptures. We could have spent a lot more time there!
We saw so many beautiful homes.
The capitol building. Its dome is covered in real gold.
We were scheduled to go on a river boat ride that afternoon, but it was obviously not the day for it so we headed back to our hotel to dry out, because even on the trolley, we had gotten very wet. When we got off, the parking lot was flooded and our shoes got soaked.
Savannah ended up getting 6 1/2 inches of rain in 24 hours, so there was lots of flooding.
We went to the hotel, did some laundry and put our tennis shoes in the dryer!
Look at the beautiful ceiling!
We ate in the Captains room, where there was a hidden tunnel that went to the river. They used to use it to smuggle in rum, and to smuggle out people that would wake up on a pirate ship and have to work on it.
In spite of flooding, we really enjoyed Savannah. Next up was a trip to Columbia, SC.

Awesome photos! We like old cemeteries too. Those were some unique headstones. That ceiling in the capital rotunda was stunning. That was a lot of rain! Wow. I’ve never seen water in the streets like that! My goodness - 6 inches in 24 hours is a fourth of the total rain in the state of California! We’d slip off into the ocean with that amount of rain.
I like that pirates place. My husband is into pirates!🏴☠️ so he’d love that place. Thanks for sharing. I can’t wait to see more
OH my, the rain. That bordered on scary!
What a lovely city!! I have never been to Savannah and this is exactly what I dreamed it was. What lovely streets and amazing houses and history. Just gorgeous.
We, too, love old cemeteries. And this one was so special. It would have been hard to tear ourselves away from the historical stones and lovely landscaping. Those trees are so interesting.
I LOVE this post, thank you for the tour! Your first photo looks a bit like the Everglades. And that bridge!! I would be way too scared to drive over it! It's an adventure all in itself! The church ceiling is beautiful, And the brick street with those gorgeous trees is amazing! So gorgeous. Love the cemetery as well.
I guess you are home and writing about your adventures. lol
I love Savannah - I would not love to live there, but I do love to visit there.
My favorite thing again are the trees - and that beautiful Spanish Moss - you can't grow that in Atlanta that I know of.
I love these pictures! I especially like the Jewish cemetery and the church. Thanks for sharing!
SO beautiful and interesting. I would love to ride a trolley. Thank you for sharing.
And Now....Savannah is on my bucket list of places to see. We have traveled a good bit in the Southern States but never to Savannah. I love the big ol' trees with all of the Spanish moss hanging from the branches. Wow...that is a whole lot of rain and I'm sorry that you all were not able to take the river cruise. So many beautiful pictures here and the cemetery would definitely have to be on my tour. so interesting. thanks for sharing this lovely trip with us...
Well...I am disappointed because I made a long comment on how I loved everything about this post, and forgot to press publish...This trip looks wonderful and so full of interesting things to do and places to see. Savannah is on my bucket list of places to visit....Glad you posted all the pictures because I now am moving Savannah up on my list....
Our niece and her "now" husband graduated from SCAD Savannah College of Art and Design. When Joe and I were in Savannah, we met up with the college kids and they took us around and we ate a couple of meals where the kids like to eat. A whole different view of the city!! LOL We loved the old Savannah!!
Ugh that golden dome on the Savannah City Hall is SO beautiful and what a building that is! Bonaventure is breathtaking ... your picture of the "tombstress" sitting with her chin on her hand? I took a photo of her that ended up being on the cover of American Cemetery magazine! Back in 2010. Bonaventure truly began my love affair with cemeteries. And the deluge in Savannah! That's unreal! As the pirates say, that's a lot 'o' wah-uh, hahaha! I really do need to visit the Pirate's House! Can't believe I haven't been there yet, haha! xoxo
I love all the pictures especially the oak trees very special. This is a beautiful place to visit even the cemetery is beautiful!
It sounds like your drive from Charleston to Savannah was full of beautiful and fascinating sights! The Bonaventure Cemetery looks like a perfect stop, especially with the live oak trees draped in Spanish moss—it must’ve been a peaceful and reflective place. I love how you captured the symbolism of the pebbles on the Jewish graves; it’s such a meaningful tradition. The military section must have been particularly moving, honoring those who served. Thanks for sharing such a thoughtful glimpse into your journey!
Welcome back from a delightful vacation.
I love the Spanish Moss hanging over the cemetery, its very moody. Visiting cemeteries is a favorite thing for Dave and I to do. Seeing those very old tombstones and reading the history is fascinating, especially the Jewish section.
Wow that's a whole lot of rain coming down on you. Glad you could still enjoy it.
I would love to visit the "Old South" Savannah. Bucket List...
Sue
That was beautiful!! I've never toured Savannah...just drove through it. Now I wish I could go and stay a while. Really beautiful city! Love the old oak trees and brick streets, and that cemetery is gorgeous. Thank you for sharing it with us. I do remember going over that bridge. My hubby is not fond of heights and he was driving with white knuckles!
The Pirates house was where I captured that ghost in the second story window. It was not open at the time we were there. I was driving our cargo van when I saw that bridge in the distance. I did not think I would make it up...but I did. We went out a different way so did not have to cross it again thank god. We sat at the bench too that was in the movie. I so loved the houses. We were told they only have so many colors they can paint them and have strict riles on renovating them. Glad you enjoyed Savannah. We went South to Jacksonville and the ride was the same with the marshes all along the way It was a very scenic ride like you had. I kept wondering how many alligators were in there. Janice
Wow what a beautiful place. That is some bridge!!!
Love the beautiful homes and buildings.
Would have loved to walked around the cemetery.
Sure did get a lot of rain!!!!
This visit you have given us to Savannah is wonderful (and your readers didn't get wet!!). That cemetery looks so very interesting. I've been to Savannah but did not see some of the things you did. Thanks for sharing!
I'm just catching with your travel posts now, Mari! What a great trip. We love history and all the same attractions you were drawn to, so I'm keeping your posts so that, when and if, we ever get a chance to travel south (and not just drive through on the way to Disney- brutal, by the way! Haha) they'll serve as our personal tour guide!! Thanks so much for sharing!
Wow! Thanks for letting us tag along I have never been to Savannah it's beautiful. Well, everything except the flooding in that bridge. We went over a bridge like that in Tampa Florida once and I was so glad that I was not driving. It would have scared me to death it's like a roller coaster going straight up not being able to see the other side until you hit the crest.
These are wonderful photos. I very much enjoyed taking a virtual tour around Savannah with you.
That bridge looks like a ride in an amusement park.
Coastal cities flood. Glad you made the best of it.

What a beautiful city!! I have relatives in New Orleans and it reminded a lot of there. The beautiful homes and architecture, pretty cemeteries above ground, and the spanish moss in the trees. Such a romantic aesthetic and feels like something from back in time. Scary about the flooding! Wow! And that was the coolest restaurant!!
