Taking in a little history

Bob and I are history lovers and have always been interested in Civil War history. Since we knew we were going to be near Chatanooga, we planned a day to stop and see Chickamauga and Lookout Mountain.
Chickamauga was the second deadliest battle in the Civil War after Gettysburg.  This National Battlefield is set up very well with markers and a map you can follow to see what happened in different areas.

We started in the Park Visitor Center where we watched a video that reviewed the events of this battle.

Then we got in our car and drove to the different stops. There are many monuments commemorating the men who fought and died here.

I think the split rail fences that were prevalent in those times are so picturesque.

This tiny cabin was home to a family of 9, but when the battle broke out, the family took refuge in a ravine and the cabin was used as a hospital.

The inside of the cabin.

This monument was dedicated to men from Michigan who fought in this battle.

" But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or to detract. The world will little note what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here."
Abraham Lincoln

Our next stop was at the top of Lookout Mountain, which meant driving up another curving mountain road.

Look at this view of Chatanooga when we got to the top!

This site was the continuation of the battle at Chickamauga. The Union army fought their way up this mountain as clouds were covering it.  It's hard to imagine.

We really enjoyed our day reviewing all this history.  Excuse our squinting - it was brighter that the photo shows!

Our last stop of the day was our hotel.  I had seen good reviews for this old hotel and we decided to stay there inside of our usual chain hotels.  It was a fabulous place!  It's the Read Hotel in Chatanooga and it totally exceeded our expectations.  It was opened in 1872 and has had some famous guests; Al Capone, Ronald Reagan, Winston Churchill...  It looks like a place you would stay in the roaring twenties and if you are ever in Chatanooga, you should stay there!

A Billiards room

Even the elevator was classy!

Look at the bathroom!

The view from our room at night.  We were on the 9th floor.

The next morning we started our 2 day drive home.
We drove 2005 miles and were in 10 states including Michigan. We enjoyed some beautiful cities, had some crazy adventures and saw God's hand in His creation.  We met some really nice people and connected with friends.  It was a wonderful trip, but it's always good to be home again!

I never knew these places existed. The monuments are very impressive. A cabin hospital! It does look larger inside than outside. The view from Chattanooga is gorgeous! And the night view from your room is wonderful, especially the glass building with the reflections. And I was amazed at how fancy the elevator is. What a marvelous trip!

What a fabulous hotel!!!!
Your photos are so beautiful and everything looks so peaceful and serene. It is hard to imagine the horror and hardship of what went on there.

My husband and I are history nerds as well. I used to know the area and it would be nice to visit again. Your photos are so nice and really show the beauty of the area, the details inside that really cool hotel. I love car trips the best because you can take back roads and truly experience the area.
A really enjoyable travelogue!

The Read Hotel is amazing. Now I wanna stay there.
Chattanooga is an amazing town. Too big for my tastes but lots of history there. I like history too. That would be a memorable trip if we can ever drag ourselves up there for a visit. *lol* Thanks for sharing your journey. 😊

Such a beautiful and interesting post, Mari! That cabin looked bigger on the inside than the outside. Very interesting. I've been through Chattanooga many times en route to family in Illinois. I enjoy seeing the Tennessee River winding around. Your photos from elevation are especially interesting. Thanks for sharing your trip with us!

That hotel is beautiful!! I find that history so fascinating too. I was on Lookout Mountain when I was a kiddo on a trip with my family. Did you feel "energy" when you were by some of those battlefields and hospital? I believe energy can be sort of "kept" from big trauma places like that. It's fascinating if you look up videos people have captured in places like that and you can almost see soldiers walking.
Great pics from a great trip!! 💗

Well someday you have to visit Atlanta and the Civil War. That hotel was just gorgeous. They say on a clear day - on top of the mountain in Chattanooga you can see 7 states. That cabin held nine people - wow.

You really did cover some territory on this trip! I'm glad you got to see so much of God's beautiful creation in the southeastern part of the country! Chattanooga is really beautiful, and that hotel really looks grand! Thank you for sharing the pictures from the top of Lookout Mountain and the battlefield. There's so much history there! I know it's good to be back home in your own bed, but it looks like you really had a wonderful trip. A nice beginning to your retirement! Now I hope you will have a wonderful Thanksgiving! I bet that new baby has grown a lot!

Hi Mari! That's a beautiful, historic hotel. I have really enjoyed reading about your trip. Charly and I also love history and have visited several Civil War Battlefields when we lived in the midwest. Last time we were in Washington D.C., we rented a car and drove to Manassas, Virginia to see the battlefield where the first battle of the Civil War was fought. It was fascinating. Glad that you are safely back home now and have memories of a wonderful trip! Have a good weekend!

I have been to lookout mountain but never knew about that Civil War battle. Very interesting to know that Michigan fought down there. We use to go to Civil War days up in Port Sanilac and Greenfield Village. Those cannons are loud. Your hotel stay was awesome. I bet you felt like a celebrity staying there. Glad you made it home safe. Janice

That view from the mountain top is incredible!!! I really love history. Gettysburg is probably the only Civil War place we have visited - quite a few times. And it's never, ever boring. Lots of it is heartbreaking and hard to imagine.

That hotel!!!! I just love it!!
