Cooking Thursday

This cooler weather is definitely chili weather!  I made a batch last week and tried out a new recipe.  It was supposed to be a copycat recipe for Wendy's chili, but we thought it was thicker than Wendy's and didn't have the same flavor.   It might not taste just like Wendy's but we both really liked it and I will be making it again.


Wendy's Chili

2 pounds fresh ground beef
1 quart tomato juice 1 (29-ounce)
1 can tomato paste 1 (15-ounce)
1 can red kidney beans, drained 1 (15-ounce)
1 can pinto beans, drained 1
1 medium-large onion, chopped (about 1 1/2 cups)
1/2 cup diced celery
1/4 cup diced green bell pepper
3 tablespoons chili powder 

1 teaspoon ground cumin (use more for real flavor)
1 1/2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon sugar
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 


 In a large skillet, brown the ground beef. Drain off the fat. Put the beef and the remaining ingredients in a 6-quart crock pot. Cook for 6-8 hours on low.

It looks good. It does seem thicker but I'm sure that is a good thing. I'm making chili tomorrow night, from a recipe my son likes that uses those BBQ "grilling" baked beans. It's sweet, which is a little weird, but he almost never expresses any preferences about food so when he asks for something specific, like he did the other day, I really try to accommodate his requests!

That looks delicious! My grandmother makes such wonderful chili. It's a family favorite, and we look forward to whenever she makes it each year!

Thanks for sharing your opinion and the recipe for this chili.
Chili is on the menu for Halloween night.
Ever since our kids were little, we have chili on Halloween.
Used to be so that I felt that our kids had a hearty and warm meal on their tummies before they went out for trick or treating.
With all our kids being grown up.. of course we don't have little ones trick or treating, but it's become a tradition:)
Might just give this recipe a try.

I need to try your recipe. I made chili last week and used Ro-Tel tomatoes. For the past many years of blogging, I have read how southern cooks use Ro-Tel tomatoes. I could never find them in PA. Krogers here in Ohio have them and I use them in dips too. They are only for people who like spicy food.

Now back to your recipe. I think I could eat it.

We actually prefer thick chili because we usually eat it with lots of "fixin's". I like to saute all my veggies (onions, peppers, garlic) with all the seasonings first, then add the meat, then the beans and tomatoes last. It seems like the flavor is more potent when the onions are thoroughly seasoned. Or maybe that's just my imagination!

I'll have to try this. Aaron is picky about his chili, and Wendy's chili is his favorite!
