I got an e-mail recently that said you could extend the life of your dryer by cleaning the filter with a brush and water. It said that dryer sheets leave a film that you can't see, over the mesh which impedes the air flow and may make the motor burn out quicker.
I checked it on Snopes and it's true. So - I pulled out my filter and tried the test they mention. After you remove any lint, try putting it under running water. When I did this, some water ran through, but a lot puddled on the mesh. After cleaning it, the water ran through freely.
Keeping my dryer working longer works for me!

I've read the same thing. I checked mine out and it should be as good as new now!
Mari,
Each time I read this I check it and mine runs through perfectly. I guess for now things are running along smoothly. Thanks for sharing this.

Now who da thunk that? Good tip!
great tip! who would have known?
Thanks for the tip. You would be amazed how many people only occasionally clean their dryer filter, rather than after each load.
I've been to a few house fires caused by this. That lint is highly flammable. Once when I got home after a large fire due to a dryer, I cleaned my filter (after just one load) and put the lint in my wood stove on some embers that were barely red. I was curious how flammable it really was. Within about 2 seconds the fire was roaring again.
I've heard that before and need to check mine out too. Thanks for the reminder.
You've got such great info. I'm going to check mine out too.
Interesting info! Thanks Mari!
Thanks for the reminder to clean my filter. It's been a while since I've done it - and I don't want my house to burn down!!! Have a wonderful day :)
Yep, I learned this little fact while I was teaching. Woohoo, I wash mine with a little dish soap and a brush about once a month. I'm funny that way!!!
God bless and have a great day dear Mari!!!
What a great tip....never heard of this, but I do know now I'm gonna be doin' it!!
*big blush*...I'm lucky if I even remember to clean the lint trap. Now I see I need to do a better job than just that. great info mari!
what a great idea! thanks for sharing... i shall check mine this week! :)

What a great tip! Thank you for sharing it. Heaven knows my dryer gets enough of a workout I will do anything to make it easier on it. LOL!
Smiles!
would a toothbrush work? or just a regular scrubbing brush. my dryer is just a year old but scrubbing a little now will save a lot later!
Great tip! I'll do this soon.
Off to check my filter!
So. Is this like the filter that's removable? I mean I guess so right? We have a stackable washer/dryer & the lint catcher in the dryer is tiny. I clean it after every single load & actually after every single cycle. I have to dry loads about 3 times. I shall try this tomorrow! I use fabric softener & sheets like it's going out of style. Thanks for the tip!!
Okay. You've convinced me. I'll go check mine. Right now........
Mine just runs straight through. I wonder if this also has to do with what type of dryer sheets you use, and also, I don't use dryer sheets for most of my loads. Only if there is something that is not cotton in there.
Good idea! Not something most of us would think about!
