Works for Me Wednesday

Today's tip is something I learned from my Mom a long time ago. When she was teaching me to bake, she told me that the tops to extract bottles, as in vanilla extract usually measured 1 teaspoon. So - when baking, if your recipe calls for a teaspoon (which is common with vanilla), you can just use the top!

I have done this for all my life, but when I was thinking about sharing this hint, I thought I should test it to see if it still held true. I used several different types of extracts. Both the tall and short bottles held true to what my Mom told me. They all were one teaspoon.

That's always what I was taught too. But I'm glad you measured to be sure - so now I'm sure. :)

I used to do that all the time. I'm not sure when I stopped doing it, but I think it was when my bottle lid started getting stuck and I couldn't get it open anymore! Maybe no one else has this problem but me, but if I did it again in a pinch I'd rinse my lid before I put it back on. But come to think of it, my most recent lid is a flip-top. Hmmm... Glad you measured and we know for sure though, because I never did.

What a great idea, Mari. Thank you for posting this. We'll do the test in our own kitchen too!

Yep, yep.....my mom told me that years ago. And I love vanilla best. There is just something about it.

Come by if you can today, I have a lethal beauty waiting for you. [and it's nothing to do with halloween today, surprise surprise. LOL]

Mari,

I never knew that little tip but figured it looked just about like a teaspoon so I used it anyway.

Great idea now that holiday baking is coming up!

You know, I was baking the other day,and I seemed to remember that to be true, but in this fog of old age...I wasn't sure. I too measured it and was pleased to not only find it true, but that my memory wasn't totally gone!

I am almost 58 years old, and I have NEVER heard that before! Isn't that nifty?
