I've got more pictures to show you today. This first picture is of a lighthouse we went to on Monday afternoon.
This is the Point Betsie Lighthouse. According to the pamphlets, it is the 2nd most photographed lighthouse in the US. It was raining when we stopped and because it is off season, it was closed, but we did enjoy walking around and reading the plaques about its history.
There is a scenic drive you can take through the park that has places you can get out and take in beautiful views like this one.
.
.
One of the places we stopped at had this sign. If you can't read it, it says - "450 foot drop to Lake Michigan. Return is extremely exhausting". We could see that people had actually done it though. A 450 foot climb up a steep sand dune does not sound good to me!
.
Here is Bob at one of the lookout points. The dunes are quite high and you can see a long way from the top.
.
After we went through the scenic drive we went to a restored logging town, Glen Haven. Again - because it is off season, the buildings were not open, but it was fun to walk around. This is the beach at an old Coast Guard Life saving station that we went to.
.
When we scheduled this little trip, the plan was to go and see all the beautiful colors. Well - the weather has been too warm and the color change is running about 2 weeks behind. We saw little glimpses of color, against mostly green, but it was still pretty.
If you are ever visiting Michigan, I hope you make time to stop at some of these beautiful places!
I'm glad you got to get away even though the weather wasn't the best.
ReplyDeleteAlways nice to get a little mini vacation!
Sleeping Bear Dunes is really nice. I don't think I would have done the 450 drop either unless there was a helicopter waiting to take me back!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos. Sorry the weather didn't cooperate, but it looks like you still had a good time.
ReplyDeleteHugs!
Kat
Still a pretty trip...that lighthouse looks like a classic.
ReplyDeleteMari, your pictures are just beautiful!!! I tried to comment on your first post this morning, but my computer went wacky so I'm commenting for both here. I know you were up near Frankfurt because I've been to most of those places too! Don't you just love michigan!!!!!
ReplyDeleteit DOES look like a beautiful place to visit. and I especially liked your "postcard" photo!!! there's just something peaceful about a slow wind blowing sand across a walkway ever so delicately.
ReplyDeleteI'd LOVE to visit there. And you're right, that 4th photo does look like a postcard! I have lived in Georgia all my life and I've visited very few places, but I hope to change that one of these days! For now, I get to live vicariously through blog friends like you. :-)
ReplyDeleteWow ~ it's gorgeous there! Sounds like a lovely vacation. Have a great week.

Mari, You could make a beautiful header out of that wooden pathway. Michigan must be a beautiful place. I am beginning more and more to realize why you girls live there.
ReplyDeleteIt is so amazing to me that in one country we have extreme differences in landforms and beauty. It takes our breath away.
Even if we were never told about God, his hand prints are everywhere!
Most of those pictures make me just want to DIVE right on in and join you!
ReplyDeleteI am glad that you had an extra special time. It is nice to get away isn't it?
Blessings to you all!
Renee

Michigan is such a beautiful state. I love those wooden walkways in the sand! Great pictures, Mari.
ReplyDeleteWow Mari- those are gorgeous. I've heard people talk about the Dunes and I wanted to take a trip to Michigan this summer- but it never happened-
ReplyDeleteAnyway, your little trip has inspired me to insist we visit Michigan next year.
Glad you two had such a wonderful time
Maribeth, I'm glad you got away from it all. I'm sure it just what the doctor ordered. It also looks like you and Bob have on a motorcyle trip with us. It's great that so many people can see what a beautiful state Michigan is. Bob is more brave than I am because when I saw the "450 drop" I would have left and would have taken your word that it is beautiful......k
ReplyDeleteMakes me wonder why I even think of looking elsewhere for a vacation. I just wish everything didn't close up so early, I think they should stay "tourist ready" till at least the end of October!
ReplyDeleteI feel more relaxed just looking at these beautiful pictures - thanks!
this was so fun. great pictures...well except for the one of your husband by the sign...made me nervous! ;o) but really, i could sit and stare at these for a long time. thanks for sharing your sweet trip!
