Alaina and Grandma's day out

My sister Cheri's Mother-in-law has a tradition of taking her grandkids out and buying them a new pair of shoes before each school year.  Cheri mentioned it a few weeks ago and talked about what a nice tradition it was, thinking I might like to do it with Alaina.  I thought it was a great idea, so last week Alaina and I had our shopping day.  She starts school on the 6th.  She's too young for regular kindergarten since she doesn't turn 5 until the end of October, but will be Pre-K.

Here we are, ready to go.  Ruby wanted to join us for our picture.

Ruby also wanted to go with us.  This is her sad face when she found out she had to stay home.

I told Alaina she could choose any place she wanted for lunch.  Guess where we ate?  McDonalds of course!

Going to the mall with a kid opens your eyes to things you don't notice regularly.  We were on the second floor and Alaina was fascinated by the view looking down at the bottom floor.  She kept stopping and looking down there.

And escalators?  They are like a ride!  We went up and down several times, trying the escalators in several stores!

After checking a few places, we found some shoes.  They are actually short boots, which will be nice in the winter.  She was happy with them and I had to persuade her that it wasn't time to wear them yet.

She was going to ride the merry-go-round in the mall, but a sign said the animals on it were "resting", so she took a little ride on this helicopter, and she enjoyed it.

There was also a cart selling balloon creations.  Alaina picked a flower and said she would share it with Ruby.

After we left the mall, we made a pit stop at Michael's to see Aunt Heather at work.  She thought she should go see Grandpa too, but that would have been too far out of the way.

We had such fun together and I'll be praying that she has a wonderful year at school.

  1. What a fun trip together. I pray she will have a very good school year. I love her boots. My little niece, Ella, has a similar pair of pink boots. How nice that you two could stop and say Hi to Heather. Ruby looks so sad, but I'm sure the balloon flower cheered her up. Not too long ago a young lady in our fav Mex restaurant made us a weiner dog balloon figure! I can remember visiting shopping malls in Atlanta when I was a little girl and the escalators were a big deal! There was one with a fountain beside it and Karen and I would throw coins in from the escalator!
I know this will be a memorable day and a tradition for years to come.

  7. This is a fine tradition and one Alaina (and later, Ruby) will remember with love for the rest of their lives. Someday they can do the same for their grandchildren. I love this. Ruby's pouty face is adorable. Thanks for sharing the fun day with us!

  11. Looks like a lot of fun! She looks so happy! I remember how much fun it was going to the mall with my parents when I was little. The food court on the second or third-story story looked down on an ice-skating rink below! That was really neat to look down on. And I thought escalators were fun too--but I really loved the carousel. Ha! In another 15 years, Alaina might be like me, commenting on someone's blog how much she loved the time spent at the mall with her grandma. What a wonderful experience!

Oh and I must mention that I LOVE her purple shoes too!!!

Sweet sweet Ruby....left behind. Maybe next time Grandma, you can take HER somewhere. Just the two of you.

  15. You and Cheri always think up the best ways to bless people! Alaina's boots are so cute! I have to agree with Betsy. It wasn't that long ago that poor little Ruby would have cried if she had to go. Savor every moment. They grow up way too quickly.

  18. Aww! She had so much fun, and I think she liked that it was a special time with Grandma. Ruby was not very pleased about that though and needed to be persuaded inside with treats. :)

She loves her boots and I know she'll be wearing them a lot!
    Thanks again for taking her!

  20. What a great tradition to start. I was able to take both Melanie and Allissa shopping this summer and buy them new dresses. Then, TG and I were out and saw what just had to be Dagny's winter coat. It's such fun treating them. I love Alaina's short boots. They'll be cute but practical for school! Good job. xoxo
