It wasn't a very good day at the nursing home today. The flu (the vomiting kind) has struck there, with a vengeance!
We had a few people sick on Saturday, Sunday more residents got it and a few staff. Today it got worse. About 1/4 of the residents are sick, half of the aides that were supposed to work this morning called in and one of the afternoon nurses called in.
This means people are working extra and working very hard when they are there.
Today we tried to keep our residents in their rooms as much as possible to avoid passing of the bug. We are washing our hands even more than we usually do - and that's a lot! We also put a note on our front door, discouraging visitors. This protects both the residents and the visitors, but some people still want to come in. I'm praying that this won't be too much for some of our frail people. They don't tolerate sickness nearly as well as they did when they were younger.
If you have avoided the flu so far this year - be thankful!

Yuck! Oh, Mari, stay well...
ReplyDeleteYUCK! is right I hope that you stay well.Hugs my friend.
ReplyDeleteMari - praying that you stay well also. That's a lot of yucky stuff going around at your work.
ReplyDeleteMari, stay well! This all just went through where dad lives - they shut down to visitors too.
ReplyDeleteMari,
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that your residents have the flu. It's so easy for the elderly to come down sick and so hard for them to get over it.
I haven't had the flu but did have that nasty sinus and ear infection that just wouldn't give up. I'm much better now and am feeling more like myself, but some symptoms remain.
I just saw the post below and enjoyed the collage. It looks about the same here. I love the winter birds. I just wish I could lure more species to my property.
Take care and be careful. You don't want to come down with that flu. I hope you had your flu shot.
Blessings,
Mary
I'm so sorry to hear this, that flu sure is nasty this year, I hope it passes quickly for you. I'll keep you and everyone in my prayers!
ReplyDeleteHave a great Tuesday,
Kathi :)
I feel so bad for them and you all! Take care of yourselves while you fight this!
ReplyDeleteNow you're probably glad you already had it!!
ReplyDeleteI'm crossing my fingers and toes and everything else that we don't get it- so far so good!
Bless their hearts. I hope too that you can somehow avoid the bug and stay well. The snow collage below is so beautiful.
ReplyDeleteWe're in State College again, so stop by for some really adorable pictures.
I am praying you stay well and thankful for your service to all those people who need help. It's a special person that loves to take care of the "senior crowd" and I know you are appreciated by many.
ReplyDeleteThis stuff went around our house (and our daughter's, where I believe TG and I picked it up) the week before Christmas. I lost three whole days to violent vomiting and then trying to recover. I was as sick as I've been in a very long time. I don't know how the elderly residents survive an illness like this. I hope you don't get it, Mari, from taking care of them (although I know you don't look at it that way). I have prayed today for you and your patients! Take care of yourself!
ReplyDeleteYou're right: YUCK! I am generally terrified of the flu. In 2003/2004 (New Year's, haha), I came back from a mission trip to New York with 103 degree fever and a pretty nasty flu. It was rotten. I was doing shots of dayquil in the church we were staying at.
ReplyDeleteGross, icky, poo!!! I hope everybody gets well soon. It's so hard when residents and staff get it. When I worked there I used to think that it was time to open windows and bleach EVERYTHING!!! I feel so bad for these old people...Please tell everyone that I said "Get Well Soon".....Kae
ReplyDeleteooohh I remember those days, so not enjoyable. Hope you don't get it.
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't get it. Stay well...I'm feeling a little crummy myself today.
ReplyDeleteoh man, never thought about what its like if it strikes places like where you work. those poor people. already dealing with enough! ugg. be safe and hope you can steer clear of it too!
ReplyDeleteIsn't it terrible?! Both my girls (nurses) are working understaffed. My one daughter is working 10 hours a day and is on her 9th day straight.
ReplyDeletePraying for that hedge of protection around you and yours that you don't get sick or bring it home to share! Also praying for those precious people you care for.
Its a little better today, but they are still eating in their rooms. Staff is better as well, so far.
ReplyDeleteOh yuck!!! Stay well Mari and I hope it passes through quickly!
ReplyDeletePraying that you're able to avoid getting it... God bless you!
ReplyDeleteThere are all kinds of flu bugs out there. I hope that you do not get this one too. Stay well, my friend.
ReplyDeleteOh Yuck, I've said a prayer that this bug doesn't affect you and that it leaves everyone else as soon as possible.
ReplyDeletepraying you stay healthy, Mari! I am so sorry to hear of this big yuck at your work!! Praying those dear elderly people make it through quickly.
ReplyDeleteWill definitely pray for all the residents and the staff!
ReplyDeleteSorry to hear this. Hope you stay well! Extra chicken soup for you!
ReplyDelete(in my best soup-nazi) voice.
Yuck is a perfect title- and the picture is so fitting. Hope things are better today
ReplyDeleteOh Mari... I'm so sorry. I pray it is a fast moving flu. My boys were hit with a stomach bug that only caused them to throw up once and moan for 4 hours after. Then they were up and at em. (Still hoping little girl doesn't get it.)
ReplyDeleteLove you dear.
