Slow Cooking Thursday

It's a cold and rainy day here in Michigan and I find I am using my crock pot more in this weather. It's so nice to come home from work and find supper almost done. Here's a good main dish for cool evenings.

Cube Steaks with Gravy
1/3 cup flour
6 beef cube steaks
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 large onion, sliced and separated into rings
3 cups water, divided
1 envelope brown gravy mix
1 envelope mushroom gravy mix
1 envelope onion gravy mix
Hot mashed potatoes or cooked noodles

Place flour in large, resealable plastic bag. Add steaks, a few at a time and shake until completely coated. In a skillet, cook steaks in oil until lightly browned on each side. Transfer to slow cooker. Add onion and 2 cups water. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or until meat is tender.
In bowl whisk together gravy mixes and remaining 1 cup of water. Add to slow cooker; cook 30 minutes longer.
Serve over mashed potatoes or noodles.
Yield: 6 servings

  10. That sounds yummy, except I'd have to serve it with the mashed potatoes on the side so that no foods touched. It actually sounds a little bit like a recipe my mom does in the crock pot with cans of cream of mushroom soup instead of the gravy mixes, and she uses pork chops.

Even though it is definitely cool here today, at least it isn't raining anymore!

  11. I can't deal with all the gravy but I have one of your recipes(without gravy) in the crock pot right now! I am getting the hang of the non gluten recipes.

  14. Mari,

I left here to visit my friend for a while and then went to the bank. When I went out, I only needed a sweater, but when I had to walk a couple blocks to the bank I was cold. The wind has come up and it looks like rain. A foreboding of things to come in our northern climate.

Have a super day, my friend.
    Blessings,
    Mary

  22. This sounds delicious! I never have tried cube steaks in the crockpot, but I will now. It reminds me of something I made as a newlywed in 1982. I'd read about cooking meat and veg together in foil packets, and the method was easy, come home from work, layer meat, vegetables, seasonings, etc.. into foil, seal the edges and cook. My husband's favorite was cube steak, carrots & onions. With the seasoning and butter it made it's own gravy.
