Holland, Michigan

Every Spring, there is a Tulip Time Festival in Holland Michigan. This has been a big event here for years. As a matter of fact, one of our residents who is in her late 70's has a picture of herself when she was a teenager, dressed up as a Dutch dancer. There are a lot of young people who dress in authentic old style dutch garb, including wooden shoes and do dutch dancing throughout the week. People come from all over to see the different events and the tulips which are beautiful. I try to avoid going to Holland during the actual week of the Festival because of the crowds, but Cheri and I did some shopping there this week. (the Festival was last week) Here are a few pictures from Dutch Village.

The Village is set up like the old towns in the Netherlands, with canals running through it.
.

There are lots of tulip beds!
.

Here is a bridge across a pond that leads to an outlet shopping center, which is also built to look like the old Dutch buildings.
.

I kidnapped this picture from Cheri, so you could see what these fields of tulips look like. Aren't they beautiful?

  5. It is one of the cool things about living here- I think we might even take it a bit for granted since we've always had it!

  6. Beautiful.

I did some more research on the three bases you mentioned for Andy. I'm told that none of them are bad placements. One is close to Seoul. The largest and one closest to me is Humphreys. Do you know where he is stationed yet?

Oh, and the "yellow dust" is actually yellow dust. It blows over from China and unfortunately will be here for most of the summer...except during the rainy season, which I am told is also quite fun. I will try to get some pictures on a day when the yellow dust level is particularly high...it is ridiculous!

  7. Every single picture is absolutely stunning Mari. I so wish I could be there.

Tulips were my wedding flower. Mini tulips actually. They were just beautiful. Every spring we load our home with fresh cut tulips weekly.

Oh how I would love to see that many tulips blooming at once.

    Thanks for sharing.

  8. I still have my wooden shoes from my parents taking me to Holland, MI. when I was 5! I remember them washing the streets as part of the ceremonies. We took our children when they were small, but now I really want to go again. Thanks for the reminder of that beautiful tulip filled town!

  20. You did get some nice shots Mari. Did you have fun shopping? Did you buy anything fun? I liked going to the festival when Amanda was little was the last time. Because it is here, we do take it for granted. Kinda like the Coast Guard Festival. WE always make it to the fireworks. The traffic was rediculous last year. Took forever to get out.
