Flooding part 2

The flooding continues here in Michigan.  At this time, the whole state is under a flood watch; 33 counties out of 83 counties are under a flood warning and in a state of emergency.  The news agency's report this is historic flooding. There are dams in damage of failure and areas being evacuated.  Roads and bridges have been washed out.
The river in our area is flooded but nothing like some of the other areas around us and we aren't in danger at our home.

Bob and I went to a park near us where we like to walk in the summer. This park is called Grand Ravines, because of the deep ravine the river runs through, so we knew flooding would be contained here.

Looking down from above on the river.  The walking path is usually high above the river.

Here's a photo I took in the same spot last summer.

I showed you this bridge last week.  It's usually on dry ground, but I'm afraid it's going to be awhile before that happens.

While we were walking, we saw this.  It's a beaver!

We watched him swim and dive, and then he made his way to shore.

We saw evidence of some little trees being chewed by the beavers.

We thought it was pretty amazing to see this beaver so close!

Here's one more view of the swollen river.

This was taken on Friday night. Unfortunately, we had rain all that night and by morning we'd gotten another 0.65 inches again.  I know some of you are dealing with drought conditions; if only we could share!

  1. Dear Mari, lovely photos of the beaver. So sorry about the flooding, dear friend. Here in Quebec certain areas are also on high alert for flooding. Take good care of yourself and thank you for your post and photos.

  2. Hi Mari! I am glad to hear that you are safe from the flooding. It's so interesting that we are praying for rain and any kind of moisture out here in Utah after a historically dry winter, and yet in your part of the country, there is an overabundance! I hope things dry out for Michigan soon. Take care!

  4. How wonderful to see the beaver! He will be the only one who likely loves the flooding. What a difference in the two photos of the walking trail!!

  7. The flooding sounds truly awful and looking at the two photos of the park you can see how much the water has risen. Eek! How cool to see the beaver so close.

  8. Yeah too much snowmelt combined with the rain has caused much flooding in the Northern part of our state. Even the county my mom lives in there are back roads that are washing out. So very sad. That is an awesome sight to have seen that beaver. How cool! Janice

  9. Praying for your state, Mari. That is a lot of counties with floods and people in danger because of them.
Thank God you and your hubby are safe.
I never saw a beaver up close! Only on TV!

  10. Prayers for your state Mari. Flooding can be so devastating which is what we witnessed here in Texas last year. And the sad thing is, there is nothing that can be done. This little beaver has been busy...It amazes me how those two big teeth can chew a tree down in no time at all. You captured some good photos of him..

  11. I've been following the news concerning the flooding in Michigan. Your pictures are amazing and I am so thankful that you and Bob are safe where you are. We aren't in drought conditions here yet, but normally this time of year we are having a lot of rain and we seldom get an inch at a time now. Carroll said the other day that he thinks we are going to have a dry summer. We had a frost last night so we aren't sure we will have any fruit this year. Good to know that God is still in control, but it does cause my heart to ache for the folks who are affected by the flooding.

  12. We are in one of the states that is in need of more rain. That is a huge difference in the pictures of the walking path. I hope you all get some relief from all of the rain soon and I'm glad your house is safe.

  13. I wish you could share some of that rain with us, too, Mari, but not the flooding. What a mess! So glad that Bob and you aren't in any danger from it. That photo showing the contrast between last spring and this one says it all. Blessings!

  14. Wow I had no idea of the flooding in your area. Floods are so disastrous. I know beaver thrive in the water but I can't help but feel a bit sorry for him. (I don't know much about beavers) It just goes to show how massive our country is and how diverse the climate is - one part is in a major drought, other parts are flooding and other parts are sunny. Too bad there wasn't a intrastate water tunnel that could flow from flooded regions to drought stricken areas.

  16. Things are really crazy...you have major flooding in your area, and we are having forest fires and drought with no significant rain in sight. Everything is topsy turvy! praying for the people in your area who are being affected by the flooding, and thank you for the prayers for our area being affected by drought and fires. Love the beaver!!!

  17. Oh Mari, I'm so sorry to hear of the spring flooding. We often have flooding here in May from the spring run-off, but this year that won't be happening, as our entire state has been declared to be in a drought situation. So strange! I enjoyed your pictures, it is amazing the energy and power of water, and what it can do when there is too much of it! Praying the flooding eases soon!

  18. Being able to watch a beaver up that close is awesome.
We are in a drought, and you are flooding. I hope the rain stops and it will dry off.

  19. Yes, we need that water badly here in Florida. We even have a burn ban in most of the state. I'm glad you aren't in danger of the flooding, Mari, and feel so bad for all who are in danger. Do please keep us posted. xo

  26. Nice to see a beaver. I hope the rain will stop and the floodwaters too and that you can have a nice Springtime and enjoy the outside.

  27. That river is high! There are a few creeks and small rivers around here that are really high too! Not to the extent they have up north though!

  29. Oh my. What a contrast between last summer's pictures of the view and now.
You took great pictures, and I love the ones of the beaver. Well spotted and captured.

  30. Ugh we desperately need some rain! And you have all of the snowmelt on top of (or under, haha) the rain! I'm so glad your property is not in danger. I cannot imagine anything much more tragic than a house flood, unless it were to be a fire. xoxo
