Saturday morning we were up bright and early to drive back to Georgia. We had some short hikes planned for the northern part of the state, where I had found some pretty places to see.
After about 2 1/2 hours we made it to Georgia!
We were using the mapping feature on the car, and were a bit concerned when it had us follow this road, but we carried on.
There wasn't much on the road.
I did like this barn though!
After driving on curvy mountain roads, we arrived here. There was actually a parking area, but this path we were supposed to walk was a bit intimidating.
Things got worse, there wasn't much of a path and there were tree roots everywhere! The site I had found this on said it was a "short, easy hike". But it wasn't!
However, it was worth it when we got to the end. This is Minnehaha Falls, a beautiful sight!
Time to head off on the next part of the day.
We drove on the Richard Russell Scenic Drive. It had nice, paved, 2 lane roads! And even though many leaves were gone, the views were pretty.
There were no restaurants or places to stop, so at one point we pulled into a scenic drive and had this little treat from the wedding we were at the night before. It was perfect!
Another pretty spot; but the name of this area is Hogpen Gap. :)
Soon it was time to get off the scenic drive and head for our next spot, another waterfall.
Once again, we were trusting our mapping app. It did get us to the last falls, right? But here we were again, on a dirt, 2 track path in the mountains, praying we didn't meet anyone else.
We were doing ok, until we got to this spot. It wanted us to cross over, although the path we were on looked even worse on the other side. So we gave up, Bob managed to get the car turned around and we went back down that crazy road.
We found some flatter land, and this nice scene of grazing cows, which this farmers daughter always appreciates.
Next stop was a swinging bridge. Guess what? It involved more twisty mountain roads! We knew we were on a right track though, there were lots of other cars going through.
It took us 15 minutes to drive 3 1/2 miles through this. The road was very rutted and was constantly turning. When we got to where we could park, it was another "short, easy hike" that was not short or easy, but long and hilly.
We made it! This is the swinging bridge of Toccoa. It looks solid in this photo, but it really was a swinging bridge. I made it halfway across and decided that was enough for me.
This is the Toccoa River that the bridge goes across.
This was the end of our adventures for the day. Some parts were just a little too adventuresome, but we sure will have memories!
Tomorrow we are on to Chattanooga!
What nice photos - beautiful scenery. I’ve never seen a waterfall like that. Very pretty. Love the photo of the flat land with the cows and red barn. Hogpen Gap looks awesome. Funny about going down these dirt roads that lead no where or through a creek! Glad you had a nice time.
ReplyDeleteYou are very brave and I am a big sissy. I would stand a safe distance and admire the swinging bridge, but I would never step foot on it!!! Beautiful scenery though!
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing you had to continue on across the bridge because you could hardly turn around! What an adventure!!! Your photo of the old house with the green roof and giant trees is amazing! Should be on a postcard. As for me, I think at some point I may have needed a bit of Valium. Or perhaps even some propofol...
ReplyDeleteOh, Friend, those "short and easy hikes" and the "paths" that were called roads made me chuckle. You need to come to WV so I can show you more of the same! lol The scenery is absolutely gorgeous there, though...even with the leaves missing.
ReplyDeleteHi Mari, I enjoyed all your pictures! God's beauty in nature is so special. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis adventures look scary! I would not have crossed the whole bridge either. I’m waiting for your next adventures!
ReplyDeleteThis is a trip that I know I would love. Beautiful scenery and thank you for capturing all of this beauty in your pictures. Waterfalls and running river water makes for the perfect day. I'm so glad you all were able to take all of this beauty in. What a wonderful trip...
ReplyDeleteWow guys I had no idea you were THAT intrepid! I would have said NO at the first sight of any uneven or uphill path, hahahaa! But y'all forged ahead and wow, the picture of Minnehaha Falls is really something. So wild and beautiful! I would be saying where is the coffee shop? Hahaha but y'all sure did wring out lots of different experiences on that trip! Well done. xoxo
ReplyDeleteThose pretty water features definitely made it worth it! And what a cute treat from the wedding! I'm not sure if I would have made it across that bridge, either! Haha!
ReplyDeleteYou were very near the area we stayed at back in October! I know the swinging bridge was something we talked about going to see, but I know my hubby would not have liked being on it so we decided to pass on that. But I know what you mean about those roads! Yeah, they can be scary!! But so much beauty up there to see if you are brave enough to venture forth! Thanks for sharing the beauty with us!
ReplyDeleteWow! You guys do so many fun and exciting things! Beautiful photos! Thank you for sharing. And Happy Retirement, my friend!
ReplyDeleteYou had quite an adventure.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to walk over that bridge. Beautiful scenery. Loved the waterfall.
Me thinks I would have been scared driving those roads wondering if someone with a shot gun pulled up. Beautiful falls though. No swinging bridge for me though. Have fun in Chattanooga Choo Choo! Janice
ReplyDeleteSo very pretty and more adventurous than I would have been up for!! I'm all for back roads but those look better suited for horseback!! LOL We loved Chattanooga!! I'm looking forward to your next post!!
ReplyDeleteLooks like fun but I would have been super nervous driving those dirt roads in the mountains! Like you said I would want to run into anyone else! That waterfall is so pretty! Too bad you never made it to the other one!
ReplyDeleteThose are our north Georgia mountain roads. We are twisty and turvy all over the place. It was nice to see you post them.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful views from Georgia! You sure captured some gorgeous photos. And I love your snack moment!! Lol That was adorable and so handy. :)
ReplyDeleteMari, you are an adventurer for sure, and I think it was the perfect trip, but I could definitely hear myself in your comments...like turning back on the bridge. Yeah. Me too! Hahaha!
ReplyDeleteOh. My. Goodness. I do not have that much adventure left in me anymore. Dick would not have wanted to be with me, hahahaha!!
