Last Saturday, Bob and I went to an air show. I've been to quite a few of them, as Bob and our son Andy have always been big fans of aircraft, especially the old ones. Andy ended up in the military working on aircraft, and although he is no longer serving, he works as a civilian at Fort Campbell, working on Apache helicopters.
This time we were going for a special reason. But first I'll tell you a little about the day.
It was raining as we got close to the airfield, and when we got out of the car, there was a fine mist and a cold wind. I was pretty cold and hadn't thought of taking a jacket. After all, it's July!
However, we made the best of things, walking around and checking out some of the aircraft that were parked there.
Then we got to watch the first section of the airshow.
This is a coast guard helicopter with a guy hanging out of it, showing how they do water rescues.
That was fun, but the real reason for being there was a gift Bob got from the family for his retirement.
He got the gift of a plane ride...Here is the plane in the middle of the photo, and the guys that were riding walking out there. There were 6 men including Bob that were on this ride. The other plane out there is a B17 bomber.
Here's some pictures Bob took from the plane.
He was sitting right behind the pilot, co-pilot and crew chief, until he got his turn to crawl through a little tunnel to the bomber seat below them.
Looking out that glass front.
The Norden Bombsight.
When the 30 minute ride was finished, they got a ride back on a golf cart. He was pretty excited!
He loved it!
Wow, what a wonderful gift! Memories to last a lifetime. The plane looks so modern with the glass front. I would never have guessed how old it is! I love your shots of the air show!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cool air show where one can even ride the plane!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful and thoughtful gift, Mari!! My husband would have also loved it! I'll check on the next air show here to see if there's anything like it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post...Bob looks ecstatic!
hugs
Donna
Wow what a day you got there with all that plans
ReplyDeleteThat was a perfect gift to Bob. How fun for him to ride in Rosie's Reply. They don't have much room in the plane for the pilot or co-pilot do they?
ReplyDeleteAwesome gift and that big smile and thumbs-up say it all!! Lakeland has a big Fly-In every April. It is not too early to plan a trip to Lakeland in the spring!! Just saying!!
ReplyDeleteMy friend! What a wonderful gift! His smile shows how much he enjoyed it! Thank you for sharing this. I learned more from you about bomber planes than I ever did at school. And please thank your son for his service. Hugs!
ReplyDeleteThe airshow looks like a lot of fun. So glad Bob enjoyed the plane ride. What a great retirement gift for him!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful gift!!! He looks all smiles. Glad it was clear enough to go.

I have only been to an air show once as a teen, in the early years of teens. My dad took us to see the Blue Angels. Maybe the next time they are in town I will go see them. I need to start getting out and about more. Been getting lazy. Looks like you had a great time. Hvae you ever wanted to learn to fly?
ReplyDeleteWow what a treat that must have been for Bob. What a great experience!!
ReplyDeleteWe've been to quite a few air show and I always enjoy them.
What a fun experience for Bob. I glad the weather cleared up. Thanks for Sharing!
ReplyDeleteAren't the aircraft just the coolest things!? I would love to take a short flight in one. Would also like to ride in an Apache helicopter, fully armed, of course. *lol* Wonderful photos. Glad y'all got to go. xx
ReplyDeleteWow was that an epic gift! What an amazing opportunity. Especially someone that would love history and reading about these guys being in a bomber in WW 2 and then getting to experience it himself. So cool 😎
ReplyDeleteI never thought an air show would be my thing, but we went many years ago and I loved it!!
Yay Bob!
How utterly, totally, and overwhelmingly perfect a gift for Bob! And look at him beaming, so thrilled at that wonderful opportunity he had to ride in that vintage plane! Fabulous. You all hit a home run with that one! xoxo
ReplyDeleteGreat retirement gift for Bob! Nice photos of the air show!
ReplyDeleteI would love to do this for my husband. He also loves aircraft. He served in the Navy/Coast Guard for 20+ years but has always had a passion for military aircraft. He can hear a plane and know what it is. He is always watching anything he can on military planes etc. Once we were at a State military function with a flyover - apparently they didn't have the money to pay for an American military plane so they substituted by using a Soviet MiG and he loudly let them know...got all the Veterans rilled up. It was funny.
ReplyDeleteWhen we used to travel we would stay on AFB around the country and there is always a museum that we would go to.
That is such a special gift - I'm thinking it is probably quite expensive. I should start tucking money away so I can surprise him. I've seen them at air shows here but never inquired about it because he was with me.
Great photos of a happy husband!
So glad the weather cooperated for his surprise flight! I would never have been able to sit in that glass part. No way. We use to go to the air show at Selfridge ANG and we lived fairly close to the airfield and the planes usually practiced over our house so we would be able to enjoy the the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds and some older aircraft. ReplyDeleteWhat a nice gift! My husband would love it too. Bob looks very pleased with his gift!
ReplyDeleteWow! That is so awesome! I’m so glad he got to do that, and he got some great pictures! My son loves Apache helicopters and can spot them way in the air whenever they happen to fly over us. That’s so cool that your son works on them!
ReplyDeleteThat is a crazy cool gift, Mari! I've seen those planes at airshows and even crawled into a B-17 once to see where my dad was positioned, as he served as a WWII tailgunner in one. His plane was called The Little Runt and was shot down on 2 occasions. His pilot was only 21 - several years older than my dad at the time - but he was able to thankfully land the planes safely. It's really crazy to think about what those boys went through. What a neat ride though, it's obvious from Bob's huge smile that he loved his present.
