Last week, a friend and I went for a little getaway to Shipshewana, Indiana. It's a town that has embraced all the Amish people livingnin and around it and has a lot of tourists come because of that. There is a huge flea market that happens twice a week all summer, and lots of fun shops. There are also quite a few Amish shops.
We left Thursday evening, after I got out of work. It's about a 2 hour drive from my home to Shipshewana.
We had both been to this area many times, but had put the hotel address in our phones just to be sure. Well, that backfired. Both of our phones were leading us in different directions, and we ended up in a few fields. We stopped to ask directions and even called the hotel and still we couldn't find it! At this point we were laughing so hard, and also feeling like crazy people! It turns out that our phones were leading us the wrong way down the street it's on, so no wonder we couldn't find it. When we got to the hotel, the guy at check in said it seems to happen a lot when people try to use GPS, so we felt a little better! :)
Then we came in and checked out the hotel.
The hotel had a complimentery breakfast that was probably the best I've had at a hotel. They even made you omelettes to order.
Then we checked out and went to some of the shops.
We had fun shopping and found some cute things. I even bought a few Christmas gifts.
Later in the afternoon, we had an early supper at The Essenhaus, which is a huge restaurant that is well known for it Amish meals.
After that we went back to an Amish store, which is so fun to walk through.
I had taken a cooler and bought some meat here to stock the freezer with. The meat is much more reasonably priced and it's healthy, since the Amish feed their livestock natural foods.
Time to go home - we got back shortly before 7.
It was such a fun time. Plus - my freezer has meat in it and I got a few gifts purchased!
I grew up hearing of Shipshewana. There were probably Mennonite churches there. Looks like a fun little trip, and having meat in the freezer is an extra plus!!
ReplyDeleteYou got great photos of your trip! The ice-cream parlor reminds me of the ones back in the 50's. The sunset is my favorite photo, it is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI love Amish country. I went in Lancaster and around, I love their food and their crafts! You are lucky !
ReplyDeleteI too find the Amish lifestyle impressive ... And I envy their way of simple lives.
ReplyDeleteFun trip!!
Hi Mari - this looks like such a fun place to visit! So glad you and a friend could go. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI giggled about the GPS leading y'all astray. We've had ours do that too. I still prefer paper maps. They never lie. *lol*
ReplyDeleteI like Amish made items. We buy Amish butter at our local Piggly Wiggly. Their furniture is always well made too. When our country collapses, they'll be able to support themselves easily, won't they.
Wonderful photos.
Blessings. xx
What a nice break for you to be able to go with a friend and see some pretty things. I too love the Amish buggies and found them very interesting. I wonder why the gps doesn't work good there especially since they said it happened a lot.
ReplyDeleteWe live in Amish country up here...beautiful photos Mari. I hope you have a lovely rest of the week. smiles
ReplyDeleteSounds like a perfect little get-away!
ReplyDeleteExcept for the GPS thing.
Mmmmm, does anyone remember MAPS? And using them? LOL Seems like it's time to return to their use. At least, for backup!!!!!
What a perfect place to live, to be able to live on Amish grown food!!!!
What a neat trip! I haven't been to Amish Country since I was a girl. I still have my corn husk doll from the trip though. So delicate.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun trip. We have a Mennonite store near us and I love to shop there. I also like the drive out there as it is in the country. What did you buy as Christmas gifts??? I am nosy.lol
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun trip! I love Amish made products.
ReplyDeleteSo much fun.
ReplyDeleteI have never been to Shipshewana which is silly because we're not super far and so many people I know have been there and love it! Oh well, one day!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, how I love shopping in the Amish stores and eating their delicious food! There is actually an Amish restaurant a couple of hours south of us that I keep saying I want to go to and then forget about it. Need to dig up the name again and make some plans! Thanks for sharing your fun!! I sure understand about wrong way instructions from a GPS. Got stuck on a dead-end road once with no way to cross the fields to our destination! WAZE has never taken me the wrong way, at least so far.
ReplyDeleteSounds like Lancaster County! We don't see a lot Amish where we live now but our former home had many Amish farms nearby.
ReplyDeleteWow, that sunset!! I love a pretty sky!
What a picture perfect trip! I love Amish country too. They make the most beautfifully crafted things. I love seeing their buggies and clothes too. Nothing like quality time with a friend - plus great food and fun shopping! Sign me up! Lol
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice to get away even for a few days. I haven't been anywhere since long before Covid and I'm beginning to feel cabin fever. I can't even travel to where I usually go up country to visit of increasing Covid numbers and restrictions. Winter is coming soon and then we'll be cooper indoors. I'll have to adjust my thinking. Glad you had a lovely time. The sky photo was awesome.
ReplyDeleteI love Shipshewana! It's been so long since we have been there. You've made me want to go back. When we went to New England two years ago, we stayed at a hotel in Pennsylvania that had a chef making omelets to order! I thought that was just about the coolest thing on the whole trip, haahaa! And yay, you got a jump on Christmas shopping! It's right around the corner! xoxo
