We spent one day with Andy and Nikki. They live only 4 hours away and enjoy staying in the area, so they had some good tips on places to go.
We started the day with breakfast at a place that known for their giant cinnamon rolls.
We went to the historic district of Pigeon Forge and visited the old mill. It's still working and they sell the grain the grind here.
Then we went on to something Nikki had planned. She found someone who offered flights in a 1927 Waco biplane over Pigeon Forge. Bob and Andy have shared a love of aviation and historic planes all of Andy's life, and he now works on Apache helicopters at Fort Campbell. This was a flight of a lifetime for them both.
While we were waiting, this huge helicopter landed. It's a fire fighting helicopter. You can see the hose laying out it front of it. It's able to get water out of a lake or river and then spray it over a fire. There were some forest fires they were fighting in the park. It was very interesting to see.
After the flight, Andy drove us to see more sights in the park.
Isn't this a beautiful spot? I think I could live in one of these old cabins! However, I don't think they'll be standing for too long.
Then the girls talked Grandpa into going into the hot tub with them. Somehow the temp had gotten turned down and it was a chilly tub! But they had fun anyway!
The end of another fun day!
The two old windows are very cool indeed.
ReplyDeleteI'm very impressed by the firefighting helicopter. It's a 'must have in every country as fires in forests and parks occur rather frequently.
The girls and grandpa in the tub make for quite a funny picture!
What a wonderful day you had, just packed with adventures! The girls look overjoyed! I love the photo of the biplane taking off with the mountains ahead. And the hot tub!
ReplyDeleteI would definitely take THAT flight!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! What a great time, smiles.
ReplyDeleteHi Mari, the cinnamon roll looks so delicious! John and I visited the old mill on our honeymoon 29 years ago. It was Christmas and those pretty windows at wreaths in them, how nice that Bob and Andy were able to fly in the biplane. My brother, too, has a love of aviation,
ReplyDeleteAlaina and Ruby look like they enjoyed the hot tub. Hope you have a nice day today.
Such a cool vacation for you all. :-)
ReplyDeleteSo glad you had a good time in the Smokies. When I was a little girl that was our vacation area, being about two hours from Chatsworth. Cades Cove is my favorite. I was in Pigeon Forge several years ago for a girls trip with my mom and sisters and I could not believe how commercial the area has become. I told Leta it was the Las Vegas of the south.lol Loved getting to arm chair travel with you.
ReplyDeleteThat cinnamon roll! Yum!
