This weekend Heather and Andrew had a little party. The reason for the party? It has been 14 years since she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The doctors think it was caused by a virus as both her pancreas and thyroid quit working at the same time.
Diabetes is a chronic disease and is no fun to deal with but she's done a great job and has been able to maintain her blood sugar levels at a good number, which is the important thing in avoiding issues later on.
So - they had a "Diaversary party!" Andrew said "we can cry about it or laugh and carry on."
Bob and I were there, along with Laura and girls. Aaron was out of state for work. We had a nice supper. The red balloons were a tongue in cheek reference to blood drops from so many finger pokes checking blood sugar levels over all those years.
There were a few little gifts for Heather to open, Alaina and Ruby were happy to help.
Oliver was in a friendly mood, and the girls were happy to spend a little time with him.
Andrew even made this cake. The blue part is a pancreas.
We are so thankful she is doing well, and that Andrew is such a great support to her. We're also thankful for their good attitude about it.
The girls came home with us and spent the night.
Bob made pancakes for breakfast which was a big hit!
After breakfast, Ruby brought me her beloved bunny to me, his ear was coming off. She was so happy to have it sewed back on.
Grandpa and the girls had a little tea party while I got ready and started some laundry.
The girls spent a little time outside. Ruby was riding bike and Alaina was gathering acorns for me, We were also looking for some little sticks for a project I'll share with you later.
Speaking of acorns, here some of acorns Bob raked up from the yard on Tuesday.
And here's how things are looking already on Saturday!
We picked up lunch at McDonalds and ate with Great Grandpa and Great Grandma before going home.
Fun times with family are the best!
That's so sweet to see the great-grandparents with the little ones!
ReplyDeleteFun times with family are indeed the best!! Those girls are always adorable! Congrats to Heather for controlling her diabetes so well and for the support she gets from Andrew and all of you!
ReplyDeleteI love the photos from Heather's party; I'm so sorry she has diabetes but she and Andrew have a great attitude. Congrats to her for maintaining good numbers. The cake and the red balloons were a cute idea. We have lots of acorns too. It's hard to walk! Cute photos of the girls enjoying pancakes, bike riding and collecting acorns. Oh, and the tea party with Bob! lol Your dad is looking good. I pray he is doing better. Wishing you a nice start to the week.
ReplyDeleteIt's so nice the girls have their parents, grandparents and great grandparents. It's also nice to be able to spend time with everyone and celebrate the special moments in life.
ReplyDeleteYou always have the best family get togethers! Pancakes for breakfast are always a hit!
ReplyDeleteI bet the squirrels love the acorns. :D
Congrats to Heather, controlling/managing diabetes is not an easy thing to do. I still can not believe how much the girls are growing up, smiles.
ReplyDeleteOh I am so glad Heather is doing well and what a fun party. I especially loved the cake. So glad you could sew Bunny's ear back on. That reminded me a bit of the Velveteen Rabbit and how he was worse for wear due to being loved so much.
ReplyDeleteYour family so loving and kind. I too am glad that Heather manages the diabetes so well.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I'm always happy to see that cute little sisters.
xoxo
What a fantastic attitude your daughter has!
ReplyDeleteYou always have a good time with those little ones too.
It sounds like Heather has a great attitude about carrying on with life, despite her illness. A great attitude does wonders! Love seeing your grands.
ReplyDeleteRuby was so happy that you sewed Bunny's ear. She's been asking me for a while and I keep forgetting! Grandma to the rescue! :)
ReplyDeleteFun times with family are where it's at, I agree! Wow you really are having a bumper crop year of acorns. We had that a few years ago and although I'm hearing more and more of them hit the roof as days go by, it's nothing like your numbers. God bless Heather and Andrew for their teamwork and fantastic outlook on life. RIP pancreas cake -- only Andrew, haaahaha! Might as well have a sense of humor. xoxo
ReplyDeleteHow old are the girls? I think I remember when Alaina was born!
ReplyDeleteHeather sounds like a glass half full kind of girl! Good for her! It's always fun to have the grands spend the night! They keep us young I think!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great reason for Heather to celebrate! I'm going to share the idea with a former student of mine who has had diabetes all her life. I love to read about and see pictures of your fun times with the girls.
ReplyDeleteCompletely behind with looking at blogs, so great to see your selection of pics. Loved the diaversary idea!
ReplyDeleteHi Mari! Catching up on some of the posts I missed. I've already been copying some of your recipes. Lol But wanted to comment on this one as my brother that just retired from the military developed type 1 diabetes over only the past 2 years. They have no explanation really either (no family history etc) other then maybe something he was exposed to in all of his military years. He's got a good attitude about it and takes good care of himself. Love the attitude your daughter and hubby have too! And always love seeing your little darlings. 💜
