States with the worst winters

Winter is not my favorite time of year.  I don't like being cold, and I don't like driving on snowy, icy roads!  However, when you live in Michigan, it's something you need to deal with!  Living on the West coast of Michigan usually means a lot of lake effect snow, but this year has been quite mild, compared to other years, so I can't complain.
When I came across this list of states, rated by how miserable their winters were, I knew I needed to check it out.  In making the list, they factored in everything from weather patterns, average temperatures, and how effective and quickly their department of transportation clears highways, to interviews with locals and the historical success rates of their winter-season sports teams. This is one of those things where you probably actually want to finish last.
Michigan was nowhere near last, it actually finished second - even worse than Alaska!
Here's a link to that list - check it out and see where your state finished!

  2. Wow, you guys are second!! Definitely no medal for that, haha!! I will say that in this part of PA the roads are taken care of really well when there's snow, unfortunately with lots of salt. But hey, it works!

  3. John often talks about the brutal winters in norther MI, which is where his parents had a cabin. I have a nephew who spent 3 years in MN and I thought he would freeze to death! lol

  4. My hat is off to all you hardy Yankees!! I could never get used to that cold weather. We lived in Louisville Ky for four years and that was enough for me. It was cold and dreary up until May. I like the south where snow shuts down everything until it melts. :)

  5. Well, Florida is #46 and that makes me happy! Bless you folks in #2 Michigan!

  6. I always wondered why people lived in Michigan, but then our children cannot figure out why we live in Ohio. I would love to live in the south if it weren't for the tornadoes. I would like to live near the coast if it weren't for the hurricanes. It seems like there is a some natural disaster waiting to happen just about anywhere. Now snow doesn't seem so bad.

  7. Our son-in-law is from Michigan and he's told us about how severe the winters were there. We have had very little snow or even very few days of really cold weather so far this winter. This week are getting some snow, but it is winter! :) I guess we should expect it!

  9. I bet Colorado was on that list...I'll have to check out the link after I comment....

Pretty in photos, but after living in the great state of Colorado for nearly 50 years, I like the "No snow" here in South Texas.

  11. Yikes! That must be why the land was the cheapest and our good Dutch ancestors scooped it up "on sale." LOL!

I just heard something on the news that for the last month West Michigan also had more cloud cover than any other place on the globe. They said if you looked at the world map you could see cloud cover hanging over Michigan.

No wonder we're all sick and sad right now! :)

  12. You know I loved this "neighbor"! Lol I think I"m doubly "blessed" as I live in Wisconsin (which was only surprising 7th on the list) - however, I really live in both WI and Minnesota weather (we're one bridge ride a few blocks from my house to northern Minnesota). And geographically we're practically on the Canadian border - so you get the idea about my frozen tundra. Lol!

Fun to commiserate together anyway. ;)
    Stay cozy! xoxo

  13. Hope the rest of your winter passes smoothly - and not because it is covered in snow!

  15. Wow, ummm ... not too sure what to make of this:

"The mild winters are needed, as there is plenty more to worry about, such as hurricanes, sharks, and other South Carolinians."

TBH I never worry about sharks (I don't set more than a toe in the ocean) and I don't worry too much about "other South Carolinians" ... we're actually pretty nice. Who writes this stuff?

    But we're number 40. I'll take it.

    xoxo
