We started our vacation on a Friday morning, leaving Michigan and driving down to Kentucky. We were driving down to see our son who works on the Fort Campbell Army Base. He was stationed there, and when he finished his army time, he was hired as a civilian to do the same job he had been doing in the army. He works on Apache helicopters.
Along the way we stopped at the little town of Metropolis and I got this photo of Bob.
My Superman!
It rained a lot along the way, but after about 9 hours of driving we got to our destination, and when we got out of the car, we saw this!
We spent the evening with Andy and his fiance, Nikki, and the next day they took us to Land Between the Lakes.
Land Between the Lakes is a 170,00 acre area in Western Kentucky and Tennessee.
This is called a Great Western Furnace. It was used for melting iron ore and was built in 1854. There is another one there, but it's in bad condition.
One of the best things there, were the wild animals. There are elk but we didn't see any. We did see a lot of buffalo though! They came quite close to the car, and we stayed inside!
I don't think I want to get any closer to this Mama!
They have a nature station where they take care of injured animals and birds. Isn't this owl cute?
The hummingbird feeders were very busy!
We had supper at Patti's Settlement, a nearby restaurant which is quite well known. We had a yummy supper and were too full to try their famous mile high pie.
There were animals to see here too, along with several little shops.
We also stopped at the nearby harbor before going back to Andy's place. We had a nice evening there before having to say those dreaded good byes. I've never been good at those, and still am not!
The next morning we left bright and early - well not so bright I guess! It was foggy, and then rainy. It did clear up though.
We crossed several big bridges.
At one point our GPS took us down a 2 track road that looked like it would end us up in a farmers field. We were at a point that we couldn't just turn around, so we kept going and it turned out ok.
We were happy to arrive at our Lodge, which would be our home in Eureka Springs Arkansas for the next 4 nights.
Stay tuned for more...
Love the Superman shot, so funny. Yeah I wouldn't want to get too near the buffalo either!
ReplyDeleteThe weather looks typical of UK weather but probably warmer. I look forward to seeing more photos!
How nice to see your son and his fiance. I enjoyed your photos very much and look forward to hearing more about your vacation. I missed you!
ReplyDeleteSo happy to see you back! Your 'break' sounds like it began great and am sure it continued to be the same.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing all your pictures Mari. I have always wanted to try Eureka Springs. And so glad you are back...you were missed.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cute superman picture and loved seeing the furnace. The momma and baby buffalo were a real treat to see. Have been to Eureka Springs but just drove through.
ReplyDeleteHow nice that you were able to visit your son and his fiance. I'm guessing there's another wedding soon? How wonderful. I look forward to seeing more of your trip.
ReplyDeleteBob makes a nice looking superman!! Very cute! Great photos and how nice to get to spend time with your son and his lady! The lodge looks very comfy and now I'm looking forward to your next post! You can never show us too many pictures! Thanks for taking us along!
ReplyDeleteI'm enjoying your pictures, not having been to this part of the country, it's always nice to see some place new.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a great trip! Fun picture of your hubby, and what a good sport he is.
ReplyDeleteYou know, those GPS' can really worry a person sometimes! We had a similar experience lately, and it worked out ok for us too, but I had a feeling of dread and being hopelessly lost for a minute.
Have a wonderful week, and thanks for sharing your pictures with us.
~K.
Happy to see you back.
ReplyDeleteLots of driving but know you enjoyed it all.
I have miss you so much, Mari. But, hoping you and Bob were having a wonderful time. Love the photos, and yes I'd say you have your own superman. It was nice to see your son and his girlfriend also.
ReplyDeleteKentucky is one place I've always wanted to go back to; I was a mere child when we visited Dad's family there so I don't remember much. I know you weren't anywhere close but it did me another "wanting" of going back.
Looking forward to more!
xoxo
Bob fit that suit really well! It looks like it was made for him!
ReplyDeleteThe week you were away, my arthritis was "killing" me or we would have met you along the way for a cup of coffee together. I imagine that you passed by Indianapolis. Glad you are back and ready to take on the world again.
Hi Mari! Welcome back, you were missed!
ReplyDeleteYour trip reminds me of our little driving vacation this summer. It's fun to travel on the roads, isn't it? I really enjoyed your photos (your husband is a Superman!), that furnace was really impressive.
Your 'home' in Eureka Springs looks so nice and cozy. Hope it served as a wonderful home base for you!
Blessings,
Ceil

ReplyDeleteSuch cool pictures! Looks like you saw a ton of stuff. I love that baby buffalo! So fun that Andy and Nikki know the sites to see too.
ReplyDeleteTo answer Hootin Anni, I think we know that Dad's Kryptonite would be the common cold, and GPS's. ;)
Sorry to be late to the party but I have a feeling this will be a grand adventure! xoxo
