I'm going to tell you the "rest of the story" about what happened to Andrew and Heather on their honeymoon.
The plan was to leave the day after the wedding, drive all day and then spend 5 days in a cabin in the Smoky Mountains. That way they would be back home by Friday night and would have the weekend to get settled before going back to work on Sunday. That was the plan....
They left early in the morning and made good time until they were in Kentucky. Suddenly there was a problem. One of the tires blew. They pulled off the road as far as they could, and Andrew went to change the tire. When he got started he found another problem. The Blazer he bought shortly before the wedding had special rims and the wrench that came with the spare tire didn't fit. So, they called for roadside assistance. It took over two hours for them to arrive. They got the spare time on, but then... the battery was dead. They had the hazard lights on and were running a phone and it must have drained the battery. They got jumped and were on the way again. They had to make another pit stop along the way to buy a new tire, as they didn't want to drive on that little spare for too long.
As they got closer to their destination, they were using GPS. If you've used it, you know it isn't always foolproof. This time it was sending them on some pretty questionable back roads, through the mountains. On top of that, it had gotten very foggy. The roads were steep with hairpin turns. They both said it was quite frightening, and they were pretty stressed when they finally arrived at the cottage.
They had taken a few groceries along, and decided they had enough to stay there the first day and just relax. The plan was to go get groceries on Tuesday. However, on Tuesday they found a storm had come during the night and blanketed them with snow. Then they got a call from the rental agent saying that travel was prohibited and they had to stay in. That was a problem because Heather is diabetic and they needed to get some food in the house. The rental agent called back and told them there was a local man who lived near them who would take them down the mountain and bring them to a hotel, but they had to pack their things and prepare to be gone a few days.
They packed up, got picked up by this nice man and went to the hotel. It was in an area that had a few restaurants, but not much else to do.
The rental agent stayed in touch with them, as it continued to storm - ice and snow! That meant there was no way to return to the cabin. I told you earlier, they were planning to come home on Friday. That didn't work as their vehicle was still up the mountain and they couldn't get to it.
The weather finally cleared on Friday evening, and Andrew was taken back up the mountain to get his Blazer. They left early Saturday and got home without any more trouble.
It wasn't what they planned, and it was pretty disappointing that they couldn't enjoy that log cabin, but they still enjoyed their time together. And - they'll always remember it! They did say that maybe their next trip should be by train!
*The cabin in the photo is just a stock photo, not their actual cabin.
Oh no, that's some scary business especially with Heather being diabetic. I wager they were happy to be back home. But, they'll never forget it, that's for sure. :)

Sounds like they had a very exciting time. Sorry to hear it didn't go more smoothly, but I'm sure the difficulties made it even more memorable.
ReplyDeleteThis wild honeymoon will lend itself to many stories in the future as they look back.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry they had so many problems but just think what a story they can tell someday! Our honeymoon involved two severe sunburns complete with fevers and fainting (me). I can laugh about it now. :)
ReplyDeleteSo now they know how they both react to a little bit of stress in their life. I'm sure they passed this test with flying colors. And yes, they will have stories to tell their children some day.
ReplyDeleteThankful that they were safe through all of that. So disappointing.
ReplyDeleteI am thankful they are alright...one day, when their old and gray, they will look back on this and have a good laugh. Precious memories, even the bad...Blessings
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness!! Talk about a memorable honeymoon! I'm sure they will laugh about it as the years go by, and what a great story to tell! Glad they are okay, and were able to be where they could get food!
ReplyDeletenext trip they need to go somewhere warm!!
ReplyDeleteWow, what an experience! I am sorry to hear their trip did not go as planned, but am thankful they were okay. Years down the road they will probably chuckle about their honeymoon as they share it with their kids and grandkids.
ReplyDeleteHappy Monday, sweet Mari. Hugs!
I feel badly that their honeymoon ended up being quite such an "adventure", but look at the stories they'll have to tell and share in all the years ahead!! Much more memorable than if it had been just a tame honeymoon, right? Lol
ReplyDeleteBlessings to them as they begin the important life journey together. xo
Love was their true destination! What an adventure!
ReplyDeleteBut they will never forget that adventure and something to tell about way in the future.
ReplyDeleteWhat a story they now have!! I'm glad that looking back, we can see it all worked out.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, quite a time they had of it! What a start to married life. They will always remember it though and I bet they never have another holiday like that!! At least they were able make the best of it and get home again safely. xx
ReplyDeleteOh this is positively gut-wrenching. Our car broke down on the way to our honeymoon in Charleston. We only had to drive from Atlanta -- three hours -- but couldn't make it without TG having to try to find help in a very out-of-the-way place. I think he used chewing gum to fix the spot where gasoline was spurting out of the fuel line, haaahaha. It actually held for a long time! I guess Andrew and Heather found out right away that marriage is a lot of ups and downs, all taken together, and in a best-case scenario, with patience and a sense of humor. I hope their next road trip goes off without a hitch or a glitch! xoxo
ReplyDeleteI would say that Andrew is bad luck! JUST KIDDING, HEATHER! JUST KIDDING! It just reminded me of a joke I heard one time about a couple. The man said about his wife,...."Ethel was with me when I had my accident. She was with me when I lost my house. She was with me when I got cancer." Then he said, "Ethel, you are bad luck!"
ReplyDeleteI know that they were very thankful to get back home safely. My brother and his wife were trying to get home from Florida during that storm and they had some hair raising tales to tell as well.
We are grateful for God's protection over all of them.
What a story they will have to tell their children and grandchildren!! Glad they are ok, but oh my, that was an adventure!
ReplyDeleteOh that was such a perfect place for a honeymoon. Only if it was just a little wintry and not stormy.
ReplyDeleteBut in the end, the fun comes with their adventure. The most important thing is that they were both safe together :)
Bless their hearts!! I'm so glad they got home okay after all that went awry for them. On my brother's honeymoon they went to Florida and to the beach. He got such a bad sunburn and fever that they had to go to the ER in the middle of the night!! Stuff happens - even on honeymoons!

ReplyDeleteif there is a next time, we'll get Jay involved. he can go anywhere/anytime in his jeep. and he's just foolish enough to try it!
ReplyDeleteI'm know they were disappointing but what a fun time they'll have telling this story to others in years to come.
ReplyDeleteWell a very memorable honeymoon anyway! Glad they got back safely.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness! That's certainly a honeymoon they won't forget! Glad everything worked out okay in the end, even if it wasn't what they'd planned.
ReplyDeleteWe've found it's those trips where things go wrong that provide the most/best stories :)
Oh my goodness. Not exactly your dream idea for your honeymoon.
ReplyDeleteLooks like it's time to update your "profile" too. Happy one new member to your family. ;)
