Bob and I have a big glass jar in our bedroom that we put our spare change in. We don't do anything with it until it's nearly full, and then we have the fun of counting it. We usually try to use it for something special, or often use it for a vacation fund.
Here's our latest pile of change, poured out onto the floor.
We separate it out into pennies, nickels, dimes... and this time we even had some silver dollars. Then we put it into rolls and see what the grand total is.
Here it is, all rolled and ready to take to the bank. This time we had about $330! It took about 1 1/2 years to fill the jar back up this time, but that's ok.
So, that's my tip. Save your change - it really adds up!
That is super! It is a surprise when you add it all up! I have done it a time or two...now you have me motivated to do it again. Be sure and let us know what you decide to do with it.
ReplyDeleteDo I see a vacation in your future? Oh, yea, you have a wedding coming..
ReplyDeleteHow fun! Your change really did add up!
ReplyDeleteOur grocery has a machine that looks like a soda vending machine. You pour all of your loose change in it and it counts it for you and gives you bills for it. No charge, either!
Wow! That is impressive! You did a lot of saving!
ReplyDeleteJob well done! Good for you guys. I used to save change until the washing machine died; now off to the Laundromat I go, HI HO HI HO!! :)
ReplyDeleteGood advice. I used to do this too. I hardly use cash anymore so I don't have as much change as I used to but I really enjoyed doing it and always had a good amount of money at the end of a year or so!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun way to save money! My grandparents used to save their change and on Christmas Day, after we opened the presents, they would give my siblings and I the huge pile of change to count out and divide between ourselves :)
ReplyDeletewe do this too!!! it is a nice surprise for a vacation when we finally empty it and roll it all up!
ReplyDeletevery impressive! we rarely use cash, which i'm sure would save us money in the long run if we did!
ReplyDeleteThat is a good amount! We do the same but never get that much any more. When you retire money just doesn't flow that well. LOL
ReplyDeleteBrilliant....that's a fabulous amount. We have a little jar too. We really don't miss the loose change that goes in it. My mother used to say...'Take care of the pennies..the pounds will take care of themselves' and its so true.
ReplyDeleteIts a great tip..thank you for sharing

This is hilarious to me - as my hubby and I do the same thing!! However, we have a 2 to 3 foot jug in a closet that we've been filling for years and haven't emptied yet. We'll probably have to break it to get to the money.
ReplyDeleteThe jug weighs a TON already and is only a 1/4 of the way full!! Not sure when we'll get to dip into that fun money. Lol
Enjoy yours!! xo
Nice haul!!! I have a "sock" in the laundry room where I put change that has fallen out of pockets, into the washing machine. Doesn't happen often anymore. Joe has a bank where he puts his change and it adds up a little quicker. We've never had that much, though! Time to double our efforts, perhaps!
ReplyDeleteWe have a box of coins in our closet that we moved here. It is too heavy for me to carry. We keep saying that we need to take it to the grocery and put it in the machine that gives us store credit for food. Maybe some day we will do it. Good tip!
ReplyDeleteWow that's a lot of coins. I do save my change, I don't usually bring coins with because it's heavy in the purse. It's true about adding up to the budget :)
ReplyDeleteMari, we kind of do the same thing...only my husband has a quart jar of his mom's with the old metal screw on lid that he puts his in. I have a pottery vase that a friend gave me that I use. I need to count mine because it is very close to being full and i can barely carry it. We probably won't have nearly as much as you and your husband have saved up, but it is a good way to save without really missing it. :)
ReplyDeleteI love rolling change. I worked a bank when there were no change counters. We had a woman who came in once with her "vacation fund" and she had $990. I remember that because it was so close to $1000. The most I have ever had was close to $55.00. It's just to easy to grab those quarters when you don't want to cook and you want a hamburger:)
ReplyDeleteChange is fascinating.
ReplyDeleteWow, you did really well with that!! It is so surprising how it mounts up when you are good about collecting all your change together. I hope you can do something really fun with your newly counted funds! xx
ReplyDeleteThat's great! Anthony and Lori have had nice stashes of coins for vacations. Too often mine do not add up, because we have the annual baby bottle drive for the local pregnancy resource center, and we put our change into bottles for them. Also, we buy our drinking water at a machine that takes quarters.
ReplyDeleteMy mom would do that with any coins she got in tips (this is back in the 60s) and she'd use the money for birthdays and Christmas. As a single mom, that jar was a great way to save!
ReplyDeleteWait, counting all that was supposed to be "fun"?
ReplyDeleteLooks like you are in good company! It really DOES add up. (We separate ours into pennies & "others". It's always fun to count 'em up with the coffee tin gets full!
