Memories...

Many of you know I work in a nursing home. We get to know and love our residents very well, and enjoy hearing about their younger lives.  I think it's important to know about what they did, where they lived and things about their families, so we don't get stuck in thinking of them as only the person we know today.
Someone posted this series of photos on facebook and they really touched me, because of the way they show the older person remembering those times in the past.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!

"You are as young as your faith, as old as your doubt; as young as your self-confidence, as old as your fear: as young as your hope, as old as your despair."
Douglas MacArthur

  1. You make such an important point in the post. We often see ourselves as we were not as we are. Aging can take its tole in more ways than one.

  4. Oh, those are great. It so important to remember that they were young once and just like you and me in so many ways. Love the photos...so cool!

  5. Mari, this is so great. Audrey and I once visited a retirement home at Christmas and sat visiting with a gentleman. There was a picture on his wall of him at about age 30, posing in a nice suit, holding a trumpet. It was so strange to look at that handsome picture, then back at the very old man withering away in the bed. I sat in a chair beside him and several times I think he thought I was his dead wife. We will all grow old, if we are fortunate enough not to die young! These folks deserve respect, if for no other reason than their longevity. Thanks for the reminder. Your residents are so lucky to have you.

  8. Wow....this really touched my heart. And sent goosebumps rushing down my arms.

I'm wondering now, if all our blogging friends couldn't do the same thing? Take a photo of ourselves today looking in the mirror and then taking a photo software work and 'infusing' a photo of our YOUNGER self?

  10. I can testify to this post personally. I am 71 and wonder how I got to be this age, as in my heart I am still 21, but the body tells me something else every single day. I admire you so much in the work you do. Wish there were more of you!

  12. Really, no words needed. A beautiful post, and one we should all keep in mind. I think we all see a different image when we look in the mirror. Thanks!

  16. I love all the images and yes it's so easy to forget what elderly people used to be. I sometimes feel that with my Dad, and remind myself of just what a successful, intelligent, good looking young man he once was. It helps us to treat elderly people with the respect they deserve. We'll be them one day.
