Helicoptors in abundance

A few weeks ago I shared pictures of our front yard covered in Oak tassels. It's pretty clear now, but the back yard is another story. Our maple tree is loaded with helicopters. Do you call them that?

Here are some hanging in the tree, but lots of them are floating down to the grass.  A lot of them in the grass makes for some happy squirrels in our yard!

We've seen several black squirrels enjoying the feast.

Here you see the black squirrel on the grass eating, and if you look at the bird bath to the left of the tree you will see a brown squirrel grabbing a little drink.
They sure are fun to watch!

  2. No oak trees out here in the desert, so those helicopter seeds bring back some memories of living in the midwest. That green lawn look soooooo nice. Enjoy your week.

  3. I've called them helicopters my whole life...and boy, we used to have a ball throwing them up in the air over and over!

That black squirrel looks really neat!

  5. We don't get to see the "helicopters" down here in Florida, but I remember them 'flying' down in Ohio. Your back yard is lovely, and it looks like a paradise for those plump squirrels!!

I've never seen a black squirrel before! They look beautiful. Are they as common as the brown ones?

  13. Yes that is what I always called them. I have not seen a black squirrel since we moved out to our acreage. I loved watching them.
You do have a very beautiful yard.

  14. Beautiful yard....I'd not care about the 'copter seeds at all with a glorious view like you have. And a black squirrel?---I haven't seen a black squirrel since I was a kid in Colorado.

  15. I love your shady lawn. It looks like the perfect place to relax and watch the squirrels. We have lots of those maples seeds coming down in our neighborhood too! The lady across the street who owns the big maple tree, calls them whirligigs, but I remember calling them helicopters too.

  16. We've always called them helicopters too. My mother hated the way they fell all over her driveway! My daughter now lives in her house and has helicopters of her own!

  18. Oh, those pretty black squirrels! We don't have those here. When my sister lived in Canada we'd see them all the time on visits. They look so dramatic in the snow but they're cute in the grass too!
