New Accessory

I'm sporting a new look on my left wrist lately.
I had been noticing that my hands, mainly my left hand, seemed to be "falling asleep" frequently. Then, a few weeks ago, I started to have numbness and tingling in my arm. If I was doing something and didn't get it moved to a position so the tingling would stop, it would start to ache. I was planning to talk to my Dr when I had my physical in a few weeks, thinking it was Carpal Tunnel. However, when it began to be an almost constant tingle, a numb little finger and a pain that went to my shoulder and woke me at night, I decided I better go in. (Nurses are known to be bad patients!)
Well - it is Carpal Tunnel, (compression of a nerve in the wrist) but in the Ulnar nerve, so it affects the other side of my hand and arm. I have this splint to wear for two weeks and then I have to be re-evaluated.
The good news is that the pain is much better. I'm sleeping through the night again and I have much less numbness and tingling. It's worth wearing the splint!

  1. Those splints really do help! Good thing you did get help. I actually had acupuncture done, did all the stretching exercises faithfully and have not had to have surgery yet. Sometimes when I overdo working on the computer it threatens to hurt - so I do restrict myself and exercise more again. Hope you won't have to have the surgery! All the best!

  4. I thought you were making a fashion statement - did you ask if you could get a hot pink version???
Really, I know it's awful when anything is hurting and I'm glad you're feeling better since getting the brace. Oh my, Girl, that looks like it would be very hot to wear. Take care.

  7. I'm glad you are getting some relieve from your pain. I always wondering why there is so much carpal tunnel around. You hear of it so often.

  8. Not fun! Hopefully the splint will do the job and no further treatment will be necessary.

I had to wear one for months after over-doing it while making a rag quilt a few years ago. All that snipping really did a number on my hand and wrist. Lesson learned!

Had to laugh at your comment that nurses are bad patients :)

  9. I have these symptoms sometimes in my left arm and hand area and they go away in a few weeks but wearing the splint would probably help. It doesn't help that yesterday I fell down my stairs (only 3) and now my other hand hurts too lol.

  14. I say slap some ribbons and beads on that puppy and call it stylin'!
Seriously I hope that helps in the long run, prayer works wonders in that area, and I'll be praying for you.
When I worked I had similar pain in my forearm. the dr. said I had "golf elbow". Amazing since I've never played golf. Anyway, I wore something similar and haven't been bothered since.

  15. YeeeOUCH! Carpel tunnel isn't fun. I kind of had a touch of it (or something very similar) when I was pregnant. I was fortunate it went away.

  19. Gosh, I hope the wrist wrap works. My wife had Carpal Tunnel surgery and that looked awful just to look at it but it worked. She said it didn't hurt much at all and was so glad she had it done. She got it from crocheting and the mouse on the computer just made it worse.

I have had Carpal Tunnel myself and wear a wrist wrap like that myself but usually over 24 hours and taking 800mg of Motrin I have for my bad back, is enough to keep the pain away and then when the wrap comes off, it is good to go another year or so.

  21. Mari, if you put glitter on it, you can call it a fashion accessory. You may end start a trend. Then again, you can dress like a rocker and sport the nose ring and hang out with the young crowd and you'd be in with your "arm cuff".

  22. Mari, I am praying for total healing for you. I guess you have to stop moving your hand to give it time to heal...

The splint can be a fashion accent indeed, I agree with Chocolate Covered Daydreams - that's the lighter side of it...

That's not fun....especially the lack of sleep because of it all.

  26. Oh, so sorry for your pain and suffering, Mari! I'm glad you went to the doctor when you did, instead of waiting. Hope you're able to avoid surgery!

  27. I have to wear a splint once in a while too. I was diagnosed with tendonitis several years ago. My hands go numb all the time!!! Talking about a bad patient!!!!

  28. Yikes! I'm so sorry you've had to deal with this, but I'm happy that the splint is working.

    Hugs,
