In May of every year, Holland Michigan holds a Tulip Time festival to honor it's Dutch heritage. People come from all over to enjoy the food, the parades, to see people in costumes and of course for the tulips that are all over town.
My sister Cheri, daughter Heather and I spent a little time there last week, taking in the beautiful sights!
There weren't as many tulips as usual because it got warm early this Spring, then we had a lot of rain and wind. However, the tulips we saw were beautiful!

One street we were on, not only had tulips planted in front of all the buildings, but also had a lot of window boxes filled with pansies. Aren't they cheery?
The kids look adorable. There are lots of people taking pictures of their kids, in costume, sitting in front of or surrounded by tulips.
But - as you can see, any age looks good in a Dutch costume. These two were nice enough to pose for me. Do you see the wooden shoes? One of the highlights of the festival is the Dutch, or Klompen Dancing. High school kids don costumes, complete with wooden shoes and dance in them.
Hope you enjoyed this little trip to Holland, Michigan!
Tulips are my favorite flower! I loved these pictures. I'll have to show the children the people in costume. That will be fascinating to them.
ReplyDeleteWe have a tulip farm not too far from us in Oregon. It's a fun outing we try to make every year, depending on the weather. They don't do the costumes, but the fields are a sight for sore eyes. We didn't make it this year, but here's the post I wrote last year. http://nostalgic-nana.blogspot.com/2009/04/yoga-and-tulips.html if you want to see some photos. The mountain in the background is Mt.Hood.

ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard about this. I'm going to have to remember it next year (or you're going to have to remind me!) so we can go. I think the kids would have a good time.
