Works for me Wednesday

I got an e-mail recently that said you could extend the life of your dryer by cleaning the filter with a brush and water. It said that dryer sheets leave a film that you can't see, over the mesh which impedes the air flow and may make the motor burn out quicker.
I checked it on Snopes and it's true. So - I pulled out my filter and tried the test they mention. After you remove any lint, try putting it under running water. When I did this, some water ran through, but a lot puddled on the mesh. After cleaning it, the water ran through freely.
Keeping my dryer working longer works for me!

  3. Mari,

Each time I read this I check it and mine runs through perfectly. I guess for now things are running along smoothly. Thanks for sharing this.

  6. Thanks for the tip. You would be amazed how many people only occasionally clean their dryer filter, rather than after each load.

I've been to a few house fires caused by this. That lint is highly flammable. Once when I got home after a large fire due to a dryer, I cleaned my filter (after just one load) and put the lint in my wood stove on some embers that were barely red. I was curious how flammable it really was. Within about 2 seconds the fire was roaring again.

  17. would a toothbrush work? or just a regular scrubbing brush. my dryer is just a year old but scrubbing a little now will save a lot later!

  18. So. Is this like the filter that's removable? I mean I guess so right? We have a stackable washer/dryer & the lint catcher in the dryer is tiny. I clean it after every single load & actually after every single cycle. I have to dry loads about 3 times. I shall try this tomorrow! I use fabric softener & sheets like it's going out of style. Thanks for the tip!!

  19. Okay. You've convinced me. I'll go check mine. Right now........

Mine just runs straight through. I wonder if this also has to do with what type of dryer sheets you use, and also, I don't use dryer sheets for most of my loads. Only if there is something that is not cotton in there.
