Today's works for me Wednesday is a backwards edition. That means that instead of me sharing a tip, I get to ask for one from you! My question involves cleaning my bathroom floor. I have a Shark steam mop which I love. It works great everywhere but in our main bathroom. I think it's the hairspray (I blame Heather!) which ends up on the floor and leaves a residue. Does anyone have any tips or great products for keeping vinyl flooring clean, especially from things like hairspray? Thanks for your help!

ReplyDeleteI always wash my bathroom floor by hand, using vinegar and hot water. Well, I should say I used to. Since I can't get down on my knees anymore, hubby has to do it and it doesn't get washed as often as I'd like. However the vinegar works great. Once washed, just have a dry rag on hand to dry it and it shines like a bottle.

yes, hairspray makes the bathroom floor awful! ;) the only thing i have found to work is the clorox spray that comes in a bottle. i spray (i use a ton of it) and let it sit a while before mopping up
ReplyDeleteI know rubbing alcohol will take it off of a hand mirror, but a floor is a whole lot bigger. If the vinegar trick doesn't work you might try mixing a little with water and seeing if it wipes off.
ReplyDeletethis will sound harsh, but i used to have vinyl flooring in my kitchen in a house that i rented. it had little grooves in the vinyl that caught dirt and gunk, and evidently the people that lived there before fried alot of foods. i used ammonia on a scrubber sponge and it would break it right apart. it was addictive.
ReplyDeleteI wash all my vinyl floors by hand on my hands and knees and I use a magic eraser with Mr. Clean. I love my magic erasers.

For vinyl that is something that needs to be scrubbed once in a while on hands and knees. And hairspray comes off well [at least for me] with just nothing but windex! That's powerful cleaner. Try it.

ReplyDeleteDissolve multi-purpose cleaner. Someone gave it to me years ago for hairspray issues, you know with 4 women in this house.
ReplyDeleteYou can get it at Sally's I believe. The girl that used to do my hair told me she used it on her mirrors and curling irons. I use it on my irons, doors, and floors. It works! Hot water + dissolve!

ReplyDeleteThat is funny because I would have thought that steam would have taken that away since when your sprayer clogs they tell you to run it under warm water for your hair spray bottle. I just use some hot water and let it sit before scrubbing it by hand with a sponge.

Using straight ammonia in a closed space like a bathroom is a good way to make yourself very sick, so I'd be careful about that... but straight vinegar, if the hot water & vinegar doesn't take it all off, should work just great. Use that and a scrubbie pad (wear gloves, vinegar is harsh on your hands too) if needed but you may not need to. Hairspray is awful! I remember taking fingernail polish remover to my curling iron in high school to take the baked on hairspray off.
ReplyDeleteI have to vote for the ammonia. I use a cleaner like Parsons ammonia and it makes every thing shine and it's very inexpensive. Of course your lungs are destroyed, but the hairspray is gone! LOL!

ReplyDeleteVERY hot water (as in almost boiling) and a multi-purpose cleaner worked for me.
ReplyDeleteI didn't read all of the comments and maybe this has already been mentioned, but I'm a great fan of Clorox Cleanup. I keep it in the kitchen and all three baths because it's so easy to spray and wipe up with paper toweling for spot cleaning, or even to spray and follow with a hot-water scrub by hand or mop. It smells great and really gets the area clean. Two of my baths are pretty small so it only takes a snap to clean the floors this way. Of course good ventilation is a must, but this product isn't as strong as ammonia or straight bleach.
