I'm back from my little blogging break. We had a nice weekend in Northern Michigan, and enjoyed a little Fall color.  Unfortunately, the weather wasn't great.  We had quite a bit of rain up there, some wind and pretty cool temperatures, but we still had fun.
Our plan was to drive along the 45th parallel, across northern Michigan.  This is the mid point between the equator and the north pole.
We went with my sister Terri and her husband Dave and we left Friday morning. We headed for Alpena, MI, about 5 hours from our house. We live in SW MI and Alpena is in the NE portion of the state.
We saw some pretty color along the way, and thought this sheep pasture with the colorful trees was very picturesque!
We stopped and had a little lunch here, on the shores of Lake Huron.
When we arrived in Alpena, we had supper and then wandered around a little while.  They had some great murals on the sides of buildings, including this one with 3D fish.
Here's another one that we liked.
The next morning, we set out on our trek along the 4th parallel.  We saw several of these signs along the way.
This was our view for much of the day.
This is the welcome, on the edge of Atlanta MI.  It's the Elk capitol of MI and this one is encased in glass as you drive in.
Another lovely scene along the way.
Our next stop was Gaylord, Mi, where they have a large Elk park.
Isn't he majestic?  I had to do a lot of walking to get this picture as he kept walking off to different areas when I tried to take his photo.
Next we drove to Elmira MI and hiked up a messy, muddy hill!  We were a mess, but it was worth it to see this view from Dead Man's Hill.
Bob and I at the top of the hill.
Here's the 4 of us!  Bob, Me, Terri and Dave.
This Cairn is in Kewanee, MI.  It was built and dedicated in 1938.  It has a stone from each of the counties in the state of Michigan.  I live in Ottawa County, and you can see our stone here.
We've now made it to Lake Michigan. These stones are usually all under water, but the levels are very low this year because of drought.
This is the Old Mission Peninsula Lighthouse, our last stop on our 45th parallel tour.
We would be spending the night in Traverse City. We stopped here, at the Grand Traverse Commons, an old psychiatric hospital which has been renovated and is now home to restaurants, stores and condo's.  It's a beautiful place.
We also stopped at the Grand Traverse Botanical Gardens, which are beautiful even at this time of the year.
The next day, it was time to head home.  We took a scenic route home, including a drive on the Pierce Stocking Scenic Loop.  It was raining again, so our photo stops were minimal.
This covered bridge is on the scenic loop, so pretty!
We had a fun time together and saw lots of fun and beautiful things.

No matter what the weather was, these photos were SO worth the trip. Those awesome giant trees! So stunning in their fall colors. And your covered bridge photo is gorgeous, like from a calendar. I had never heard of the 45th parallel, that is cool.
ReplyDeleteHi Mari, I really enjoyed all your pictures! We saw a heard of elk when we went to the Grand Canyon off the road tour. They are huge! I like that bridge shot. I am glad you got to take that trip with your family!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the wonderful landscape photos! The view from the Dead Man's Hill looks similar to the landscapes of Finnish Lapland. Murals are great, especially 3D fish. Have a nice day :)
ReplyDeleteMy step daughter lives in Alpena. It is a nice town. I knew about our 45th parallel but never have driven across it. Benn to it though. Wonderful scenic pictures. Wish the weather had cooperated for you. Will need to see that rock in person. I could not find the county I live in which is St Clair from your pic. Janice
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely trip you did! So pretty color. I keep waiting for it to happen here in Tennessee. It's too bad it rained a lot while you were there, but you still made memories. Thanks for sharing them!
ReplyDeleteYour photos are all great. Sorry about the rain but it still looks like you had a great time with fabulous scenery. Michigan is a beautiful state.
ReplyDeleteSo happy that you had a great trip... the pictures are superb. and I love the covered bridge.
ReplyDeleteSeveral years ago we had dinner at Trattoria Stella at the Commons. Our table was in an actual old cell! I love Pierce Stocking drive! So beautiful and especially now with the fall colors. That elk in the case looks like the one my husband always sends me a picture of when they are going hunting. It's as you enter into Atlanta MI. Fun trip!
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry that the weather wasn't better for your trip, but the autumn pictures that were able to take display such vibrant colors. Love the old, covered bridge. You know...it's the old barn and covered bridge love that I have. :) Those Elk are gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI have not heard of the 45th Parallel. What a great trip with awesome photos and sights. That elk is so pretty. Love the covered bridge.
ReplyDeleteThe mural is INCREDIBLE!
ReplyDeleteI lived up there for my first fourteen years. Saw zero elk. 🙂 I wish I had though!
Oh Mari, those photos are all calendar worthy. I love the covered bridge especially. I am shocked at the water levels of Lake Michigan. That's a big time drought. I sure hope things will recover.
ReplyDeleteThere is always envy from me for all the East Coast "color". I especially like the photo of you and your hubby Bob. The barren limbs and the splashes of color and the wooden fence. I think I would have been a "MadSnapper" with that scenery.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful trip.
Sue
Beautiful pictures of the lighthouse and covered bridge. The elk is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteIt was a nice outing except the weather!
Thank you for sharing.
I like the picture of you and Bob!
So much color, and so very gorgeous! Our trees are still pretty green here, which is unusual for late October. It looks like a really fun trip even with the rainy days.
ReplyDeletewow, wow and wow again, love the elk and the fence in the botanical garden, every single photo is a place I would love to see. I did not know about the equator thing, and once spent the night in Kalamazoo near the airport.
ReplyDeleteOh those are awesome photos, Mari. Beautiful scenery and those autumn trees! 🍁 I really liked that 3D fish art. Clever. That covered bridge is sweet! It sounds like a really fun trip. The photo of you and Bob is very good. Interesting staying in an old psychiatric hospital. If those walls could talk… Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWow terrific pictures in spite of the weather. What huge antlers on the elk.
ReplyDeleteThe murals are fantastic and loved the covered bridge.
Sounds and looks like a great time was had by all.
Such a shame about the weather but your photographs still show you had a very enjoyable time away.
ReplyDeleteThose murals are so colourful and well done on the muddy hike, the view from Dead Man's Hill was well worth it.
All the best Jan
OH, you had a beautiful trip! Those leaves and views are stunning! I enjoyed going along with you! The elk are amazing! Our trip to N. GA mountains was great, but the leaves weren't that colorful yet. I think we were a week early. Still it was beautiful and we enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing your trip with us. It was lovely indeed.
ReplyDeleteYou made the best of a rainy situation. I really does look a lot like New England this time of year except the elk. We don't have them.
ReplyDeleteCathy
Welcome back. I love that the elk were veggin'. And wow, the trees. Soooooo pretty. You took many excellent shots for sure.
ReplyDeleteFall is a great time to take photo. I think some place in Oregon is the 45 par.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos of your trip.
ReplyDeleteThe fall colors are gorgeous, and that mural of the fish is great.
What a great little trip! I had never heard of the 45th parallel before - love learning something new! :) Wonderful pics - stunning color, cool murals, neat history - and the 4 of you are all so adorable. 😍
ReplyDeleteDespite your weather, the trip looks beautiful!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, how I LOVE that covered bridge and that beautifful photo! Actually all of the photos are amazing and, even with the rain, I know you had a great time. Love the Dead Man's Hill photo and the ones of you guys and your sister and her hubby! xo
ReplyDeleteWell for sure, if you were with your sister you had fun! Sorry the weather wasn't what you ordered.
ReplyDeleteSounds idyllic, even with the rain! Beautiful nature scenes and the elk were awesome! Even the less cooperative ones, hahaa! Love the covered bridge. xoxo
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. I have lived in MI my whole life - never heard of traveling the 45th parallel - sounds and looks like something my husband and I would enjoy. Retirement looks good on you, Meri. :)
