Cooking Thursday

It's Chili Season!  We really like chili and I have several different recipes for it; white chicken chili, beef chili - some that are more difficult and time consuming, some that are easy.  I recently tried a new one that has a few types of beans and is both sweet and spicy. It was quite easy to throw together and will be added to my rotation of chili recipes.

Sweet and Spicy Chili

2 pounds ground beef, cooked and drained
1 small onion, finely diced
1/2 teaspoon dried garlic
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon thyme
4 tablespoons chili powder
dash of red pepper flakes
1/3 cup brown sugar
2 bay leaves
15 ounces beef stock
15 ounce can tomato sauce
14.5 ounce can petite diced tomatoes
15 ounce can great northern beans, drained
2 - 15 ounces cans dark red kidney beans, drained
Stir all ingredients together in large crock pot.  Cook on low for at least 8 hours.  Remove bay leaves and serve.

  1. I absolutely love chili and have for as long as I can remember. Thanks for the new recipe. Steve was my chili maker and I can't ever seem to get it as good as what he made.

  4. It looks good. I make quite a bit of Cincinnati Chili, have you heard of it? It is a kind of chili over spaghetti and topped with shredded cheddar.

  6. It looks tasty and must be very good after 8 hours slow cooking. We also have some winter dishes that needs slow cooking, they are the best tasty ones.

  15. This sounds like my go to recipe called "Glop" I put everything in it except the chili flakes. That spice is too hot for Dave.
That tasty dish is perfect for this time of year, though I eat it anytime. It even gets better as a leftover. The flavors blend wonderfully.

  20. Oh, this one sounds good. I love the idea of the brown sugar in it. I bet it is really good. I like using different beans too. Yeah, I might be able to actually eat this chili!!

  21. That looks so good, I cannot tolerate beans, simply get sick when I eat them, but I can eat around them! I do love a nice spicy bowl of chili, and the brown sugar sounds brilliant! Thank you! (ha, I scan recipes, get ideas, then just make things, most of the time!)

  22. Sounds so good! I love sweet chili! My favorite, I am ashamed to say, is from Wendy's! And I just discovered last week they sell it in a can now! I don't think I could do the red pepper flakes...I'm a wimp when it comes to spicy stuff! But, this does look good and I bet I could tweak it!

  24. This looks very good! I have a recipe for chili that I make frequently. Mine is a less spicy version and it makes a ton. I end up having to freeze some.
