More day away events

Yesterday I told you about touring the Hackley and Hume houses. After we finished there, we walked about a block to see a few more historic buildings.
We started with the Hackley Fire Barn Museum.

This fire barn was the first gift Charles Hackley gave to the city of Muskegon.  It was built in 1875.  He also sponsored 12 firemen.  This was the beginning of many gifts - by the time he died he had given half of his wealth  to the city he lived in.

This is one of the first fire wagons, which was pulled by horses.

Here's one of the first fire trucks.

The firemen stayed in this area on the second floor...

This was their tub - right out in the open!

After touring the old fire barn, we went through the Scolnik house, which tells the story of common families and the way they lived during the depression.

This house was set up for the family to live on the floor level, and the second level was used by another family who rented it.

What a difference from the opulence of the Hackley house!

This was the motto of that time.  It's something we could do a little more of today!

By this time it was nearing 2pm and we hadn't had lunch yet.  We could hear music and knew something was going on about a block away.  We heard it was a street fair so we decided to walk down and see if we could have lunch down there.

It turned out to be a biker rally!

The whole street was closed and was filled with bikes.

We saw some pretty  fancy ones, and we did find some food.  We didn't hang around long though - we felt a little out of our element.

After this we headed home, then went out for a nice supper.  It was a fun and relaxing day.  Thanks Laura and Aaron!

Again, a very interesting post with great photos! Thank you for sharing your special day with us! Joe and I stumbled into a biker rally once, in Ybor City (Tampa). We also felt totally out of our element, but we sure enjoyed looking at all the Harleys. Some of those bikes are amazing.

What a fun trip! I love history and I love touring old homes. David hates it. Someday I've got to get a girl's trip and go.

I enjoyed your photos and the info very much. I would have been a little uncomfortable with the bikers group! So happy you enjoyed your visit. We love trips like this.

Another fun day! I wonder if firemen were known for their good cooking back then like they are now.

The pictures of the old firehouse were interesting. I like the show "Emergency." Can't imagine how Roy and John Gage would like this old firehouse. I think that you and Bob should get motorcycles. You could go farther on less.

So fun! Love seeing the contrast in houses...and there's still such a charm to even the depression era rooms and furniture. Looks like it was a perfect time away together and a wonderful break.
Happy week to you Mari! xoxo

Mr. Hackney sounds as though he was a very generous soul. It's so nice to hear when people are kind to the township where they live/lived.

The fire station was really kept up nicely through the years. How interesting. Sometimes we need to be reminded of the days gone by, and how differently they were lived.

Love the quote, and yes we should remember this. I'm going to write it down and put it on the refrigerator. Thanks so much, Mari, for sharing you day trip. I'm glad it was such a nice time for you and Bob. :)

xoxo

I love seeing older homes Mari, so I enjoyed this post as well. I love that sampler as I stitch samplers and have quite a few hanging together in a room upstairs. Thanks for sharing your little trips. Those are the best aren't they?

Sounds like an interesting visit, I would have found the bikers rally the most interesting part! :D

The Fireman's quarters looked quite posh!

Oh I can see you and Bob fitting in with the biker culture just fine. I hope Bob hung around long enough to be inspired to carve a biker on a hog! LOL xoxo
