Attack of the acorns

We have lots of oak tree in our front yard. It's wonderful to have the shade and beauty of the tree, but along with oak trees, comes acorns.
Each Fall we end up with acorns in the yard, but this year there are more than we have ever seen!
The past week has been really windy and the acorns have been hitting the roof and house like someone is firing them at us. One of the trees is over our bedroom and at night we hear them hitting the roof and rolling down.
Here are a few pictures to show you what I'm talking about:

The flowerbeds seem to have more acorns than plants.

1 week ago, Bob raked the lawn and cleaned off this walk. All of these have fallen in that time.

It's impossible to walk across the yard without stepping on acorns. My friend Alan, from 2010 Daily Photo showed a picture of something made by the Amish in his area. It's an Acorn picker. I think we need one!
I'm hoping most of the acorns have come down, but even as I type this, I hear more hitting the roof!

We have the same problem here, you have to be careful walking because they make your feet roll as you step on them.

You know, I've never seen an acorn in "real life" before. Lots and lots of pine cones and fir cones, but no acorns.

btw ... you're right, that is a LOT of acorns.

I want one of those! With six BIG oak trees in my yard - I can relate to acorns!!

we've got prickly chestnut skins littering our driveway - falling faster than jay can get them swept up. he's afraid we'll puncture a tire driving over them.

I know that sound of the acorns dive-bombing the house! A huge oak towers over our house and this is a familiar melody. Then the squirrels jump down onto the roof of the sunroom and it sounds as though they weigh 85 pounds each. It's amazing. You'd bet there's a gazelle on the roof when they scamper over to the side and jump off. From now on the deep end of the pool will be full of acorns on the bottom because we don't cover our water. And I love stepping on the acorns when I go down the driveway to get the mail! See? I totally get this post, Mari! LOLOLOL =:~D

Wow, you are acorn happy!
I guess you have to take the good with the bad, but don't fall and hurt yourself in the meantime!
That Acorn picker looks like a nifty idea, maybe one even bigger would be better.
I don't have any oak trees, but I know what you mean about the squirrel on the roof...I've heard those before..they make a lot of noise!

Oh, wow!! We have cuckaburs. They annoy the fire out of me, but at least when they hit the roof, you don't hear it. =)

That is what my parents yard looks like! And every year all of our cars would get little dings on them from the falling acorns.

You are a blessing : )

Wow!! That´s a lot of Acorns! I would get really upset, if I had to clean that up every week. How long does it last, till they are all down?

Mari,

Just think of all the cool craft projects you can make and share with us. I guess that is something that can be done with them aside from saving them for all the squirrels and other animals that are enjoying this bountiful harvest. Maybe it means a early winter is coming.

I'm with Kat on the making some cool craft projects - used quite a few in making pine cone wreaths eons ago! Isn't there some pharmaceutical company that needs these for making a drug that would help a lot of people? (just kidding!) But, with this many I'd get frustrated too after a while! Like the acorn picker!

That's pretty funny! As a kid, I used to collect buckets of them. Then we'd pick the perfect "caps" to use for whistles. I still love to go acorn hunting, and my boys are just starting to get the hang of whistling with them. :)

I don't think I've ever seen that many acorns. Are the squirrels not going nuts for them?

My grandparents had oak trees when I was growing up, but I don't remember there ever being this many acorns.

OH, you HAVE to get one of those acorn pickers. My grandfather was a nut grower, so all my aunts/uncles, and my parents have nut trees on their properties. Those things really do work!
